Brits May Get Temporary Help from EU Travel Rules

Brits going on holiday in the summer might get temporary help from the EU's Entry/Exit System, which has caused travel problems.

The EU's new system started on April 10 and has caused big travel disruptions. Holidaymakers have had to wait in long lines, missing flights and holiday plans.

The new system replaced manual passport stamping and requires Brits to create a digital record and give biometric details like fingerprints and a photo. This has caused concerns about how it will affect travel, especially during the busy summer holidays.

An EU official said that European airports might ease the rules until September this year.

Uku Särekanno, from Frontex, said that registering biometric details is the most challenging part of the new system.

He explained that during the summer, airports can temporarily stop taking biometric details if there are too many people waiting. This can help reduce long lines.

The EU is considering giving some relief during the summer to help with the worst-case scenario.

However, this help is only temporary and will end in September. There are no plans to relax the rules further.

After the summer, it might take up to two years for the system to work smoothly. The most challenging part is the first time people enroll.

In the next two years, most visitors will not have to give biometric details again, which will be a big relief.

Travellers give biometric data when they first arrive at the airport border in the Schengen area. However, some British holidaymakers have been asked to give their biometric data again, even after their first visit.

Särekanno said that this problem needs to be fixed by the border crossing point. He is working to ensure that the border procedures are consistent.

He is putting a lot of effort into making sure that the practices are harmonized.
