Spain Airports Update May Be Bad News for UK Holidaymakers

As summer approaches, UK travelers to Spain face a double problem.

There are long lines at borders due to the EU's new Entry/Exit System. Also, flights to Spain are often delayed. Two popular holiday spots have more delays than last year. The delay rate at Palma in Mallorca has more than doubled, going from 3.66% to 7.60%. This is a big increase.

At Alicante Elche airport, delays have almost tripled, going from 4.39% to 11.73%. About one in nine flights is late by at least an hour. This is according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin. Delays are a big issue. Many flights are late.

Passengers at Alicante wait an average of 124 minutes for delayed flights. This often makes the total delay more than three hours. When this happens, passengers can claim compensation under UK261 rules.

There are many short-haul flight cancellations in Europe, mostly on budget routes. This is partly due to rising oil prices. Airlines cannot use this as an excuse to avoid paying compensation.

The European Commission says changes in fuel prices are a normal business risk. If an airline cancels or delays a flight just because it costs too much, they still have to pay passenger compensation.
