My name is Kate.
0:05
I am a designer.
0:07
And my design superpower is noticing.
0:11
I am pretty much always watching how people navigate the designed world.
0:19
And one of the things that I notice a lot
0:22
is stuff like this.
0:24
[Use other door]
0:25
(Laughter)
0:27
For over 20 years,
0:29
I have been taking photographs of signs
0:32
that help us get around everyday situations.
0:36
Places where, for whatever reason, we just need a little extra coaching.
0:43
Signs like this.
0:44
[Push then pull]
0:45
(Laughter)
0:47
And like this.
0:48
[Broken]
0:49
(Laughter)
0:53
I really love this kind of sign a lot,
0:56
where something is technically fully functioning
1:00
the way it was designed,
1:02
like this keypad,
1:04
but it's not really usable without this extra layer of instruction.
1:09
And I've come to see the makers of the signs as designers.
1:14
They're coming in after the work of the original design team,
1:19
to make it so that you can actually do the thing that you're trying to do,
1:22
in this case, unlock a door.
1:26
Sometimes these signs are kind of subtle.
1:30
You just know what to do.
1:32
(Laughter)
1:34
Other times ...
1:36
[This is a light switch]
1:37
(Laughter)
1:40
This sign is actually helping us think.
1:44
We have been so trained to see red as danger.
1:48
Thankfully, here, someone is letting us know it is just a light switch.
1:53
I think of myself as almost like an anthropologist
1:57
in the world of everyday instructions.
2:00
I am obsessed.
2:03
I have hundreds
2:05
and hundreds of photographs like this.
2:08
[Please use your finger to complete the transaction]
2:10
You've all seen signs like this.
2:12
You've probably seen them already today.
2:15
Especially if you have paid for something.
2:17
[Do not remove. Please insert or tap above]
2:19
We have a very consistent issue --
2:23
[No chip]
2:25
with point of sale machines.
2:27
[Tap: hold card over screen]
2:29
[Insert chip face down]
2:30
(Laughter)
2:33
[Flush this toilet twice. Srsly, at least twice.]
2:35
We also, as a group ...
2:37
(Laughter)
2:40
Seem to really be struggling in the public bathroom.
2:45
[Gently pull]
2:46
An inexplicably large proportion of my photos
2:50
were taken in a public bathroom.
2:53
I could have done the entire talk using only public bathroom photos.
2:58
[Close the lid before you flush Do not sit on the sink]
3:02
And I find this bewildering.
3:04
[Notice: Toilets and urinals flushed with reclaimed water]
3:07
[Do not drink]
3:08
Audience: Oh!
3:11
Kate Canales: But also weirdly delightful.
3:14
[Women]
3:15
(Laughter)
3:18
A place that we all use, every day,
3:23
still requires so much guidance.
3:26
[Please flush toilet after using it]
3:28
[Hover hand here. Set cup here.]
3:30
This machine fills cups with water.
3:33
That's all it does.
3:34
You would be forgiven for thinking it could do more,
3:37
like send a fax or analyze a blood sample.
3:41
It has been so overdesigned, so slicked out.
3:46
Its function is not legible to us until someone made these signs.
3:53
When I started taking these photographs,
3:56
I really was on a mission to document examples of bad design,
4:00
the way it frustrates and interferes.
4:03
But I've become much more interested in preserving the signs
4:07
as examples of ingenious human problem solving.
4:12
[This is not a restroom. It is that other way]
4:14
(Laughter)
4:16
Not. Is not.
4:17
(Laughter)
4:18
When we arrive on the scene, the sign is already here.
4:23
But I love to imagine what was happening before there was a sign.
4:28
(Laughter)
4:30
Visualize with me this scene before there was a sign.
4:34
People are starting to congregate outside of this fourth-floor elevator
4:39
that does not stop on the fourth floor.
4:42
Until someone fixed it with a sign.
4:45
[Pole is closer than you think. Caution!]
4:48
Who hasn't?
4:49
Who hasn't backed into something that was closer than they thought it was?
4:53
A sign would have been helpful.
4:56
[Sorry closed until we reopen!!]
4:58
(Laughter)
5:01
Now
5:03
when you are solving problems for humans and you yourself are human,
5:07
sometimes it can be hard.
5:09
And I have several examples
5:11
of how hard sometimes it is to get this right.
5:14
[Please use the other door]
5:16
Audience: Oh!
5:19
(Laughter)
5:21
[To lock, push Schlage button Turn to right (outside) Do not turn]
5:24
KC: Sometimes you just don’t know which way to Schlage.
5:27
(Laughter)
5:31
I think we have all been on this airport elevator.
5:36
Metaphorically.
5:38
Where is the plane?
5:39
(Laughter)
5:42
[Sorry -- Temporarily out of service]
5:45
Temporarily.
5:47
This is not temporary.
5:48
(Laughter)
5:50
[Do not inventory mannequins]
5:52
(Laughter)
5:55
OK.
5:57
[Champagne bottles only]
5:58
(Laughter)
6:01
Don't you love that there's someone out there
6:03
who needs an entire recycling bin just for their champagne bottles?
6:07
Good for them, good for them.
6:10
The reality is that most of the signs in my collection are as simple as this.
6:15
Downstairs upstairs.
6:17
It's almost invisible.
6:20
The original design assignment here was not complex,
6:24
but it still missed the mark.
6:26
And I think a version of this is always going to be true,
6:29
we're all out here, designing experiences for one another.
6:32
Sometimes we nail it, sometimes it is terrible.
6:35
Sometimes we need someone else to come in and put a layer over it.
6:38
Make it OK.
6:40
[Push. Push.]
6:41
Walking through a door should be very intuitive,
6:45
but doors are an area where we still need a ton of support.
6:49
(Laughter)
6:50
This is a reality that I actually find reassuring.
6:55
These "push" signs with their little scotch tape borders,
6:59
the very fact that there are two of them.
7:02
(Laughter)
7:03
This is so tender to me.
7:05
This is so human.
7:09
No matter how you may feel
7:11
about the advancement of technology in our everyday lives,
7:16
these signs are evidence that we still need each other
7:20
out here in the real world,
7:22
to do some very basic things.
7:25
The person who came before us took the time to leave some instructions
7:30
to make sure that our experience is a little bit better than theirs.
7:34
And that is a sign of humanity that I am always happy
7:38
to stumble upon.
7:40
Thank you.
7:41
[We are not responsible for accidents]
7:43
(Cheers and applause)
