China overtakes Thailand as Vietnam’s second-largest car exporter

Cumulatively, in the first two months of 2026, the country imported 31,372 vehicles of all types, with total turnover reaching US$745.66 million. Compared to the same period in 2025, import volume rose by 26.3%, while total value surged by 38.6%.
Indonesia remains the largest supplier
In terms of supplying markets, Indonesia continued to be Vietnam’s largest car exporter, with 11,823 units valued at more than US$164 million.
Compared to the same period last year, imports from Indonesia increased by 24.3% in volume and 21.6% in value. Vehicles originating from Indonesia accounted for 37.7% of total imported cars into Vietnam during the first two months of 2026.
However, the average unit value of cars imported from Indonesia remained relatively low, at US$13,870 per unit, equivalent to approximately VND356 million.
Popular models imported from Indonesia are mainly affordable MPVs and urban SUVs such as Toyota Yaris Cross, Avanza, Wigo, Mitsubishi Xpander, Xforce, Suzuki XL7, Fronx and Honda BR-V.
China rises to second place
In early 2026, China unexpectedly climbed to second place with 10,047 imported vehicles, generating a total turnover of US$344.19 million. This market recorded remarkable growth, with volume increasing by 84.4% and value surging by 101% year-on-year.
Despite accounting for 32% of total import volume, Chinese-built vehicles contributed up to 46.2% of Vietnam’s total car import value in the first two months of 2026.
Cars imported from China are diverse, ranging from trucks and passenger vehicles to personal cars. Notably, in early 2026, many electric and hybrid models from brands such as Omoda & Jaecoo, Lynk & Co, BYD and Geely have been continuously brought into Vietnam in preparation for market launches.
Thailand falls to third
Thailand ranked third with 7,523 vehicles, valued at US$160.19 million, accounting for around 24% of total import volume and 21.5% of value.
Vehicles imported from Thailand are mainly pickup trucks and high-clearance models such as Ford Ranger and Everest (certain versions), Toyota Corolla Cross and Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton, Pajero Sport, Attrage, Honda HR-V and Mazda2.
