Woman treats plant 'like a baby' for 3 years before mortifying discovery
We've all committed gardening sins before. While the pastime is supposed to be calming, it can become frustrating when your plants fail to develop as anticipated. There's considerable scope for mistakes - from planting them in unsuitable soil to positioning them in shade when they require direct sunlight.
However, one woman on social media has claimed the title for the most mortifying gardening blunder, after she spent three entire years watering a houseplant before uncovering the error she'd been making.
Ms Liu, from China, revealed she faithfully watered a houseplant "every single day" for several years before realising that the "plant" she'd been nurturing was actually a fake houseplant constructed entirely from plastic.
The woman shared photographs of the succulent on social media and admitted she felt quite embarrassed upon making her discovery, stating that she had cared for the plant "like a baby" before learning the truth.
Nevertheless, when she posted images online, she explained she noticed she couldn't manipulate the leaves with her hand, and it rapidly became clear that it was actually made from plastic.
The plant displayed blue-coloured veins which changed in appearance over time, causing her to believe the succulent was flourishing and developing beautifully whenever she watered it.
She continued her watering schedule over the subsequent years and remained convinced it was thriving and looked healthy. She added that she "took care of the plant like a baby" and "watered it every single day". Admitting the discovery left her feeling somewhat foolish, she acknowledged she could see the funny side.
Artificial plants are clearly the simplest option to look after. But if you're determined to care for a genuine houseplant, here are some practical pointers:
1. Do your homework: Research your plant's particular requirements (light, water, humidity, temperature, fertiliser). Each variety has distinct needs.
2. Water properly: The majority of houseplants thrive with soil that remains consistently damp but never waterlogged. Test the top inch of soil; only water when it feels dry to prevent overwatering.
3. Position for light: Situate your plant where it receives the appropriate light conditions (direct, indirect, or low light). Turn it periodically for balanced growth.
4. Choose a suitable pot: Make certain the pot includes drainage holes to avoid root rot. Transfer to a larger container when the plant becomes too big.
5. Maintain cleanliness: Remove dust from leaves using a moist cloth to help them "breathe."
6. Monitor for pests: Inspect frequently for indicators of pests (such as sticky residue, holes, or webs). Address immediately if discovered.
7. Trim and tidy: Cut away dead or yellowing foliage to promote fresh growth.
