Calgary Starts Next Part of Bearspaw Feeder Main Replacement

Construction has started in Bowness. Some streets are closed.
City officials said work will start on 83 Street N.W. and 77 Street N.W. to connect pipes.
Next month, crews will work on 34 Avenue N.W. between 79 and 80 Street N.W.
Crews will dig a trench to install the pipe.
This work will affect residents with detours, noise, and parking issues.
Crews started work near Melba Seto's home, blocking some houses.
Melba Seto said it's frustrating but necessary. Many houses are blocked.
There will be detours on 34 Avenue N.W. as crews work block by block.
The pipe installation will take about four weeks per block.
After that, crews will fix the road and sidewalk, taking about two months.
The open-cut approach is the fastest way to replace the feeder main.
This approach is different from the first phase, which used micro-tunnelling.
Micro-tunnelling involves digging a tunnel with a boring machine.
The city's infrastructure manager said work is on track.
Over one kilometre of concrete pipe has been installed so far.
The sixth and final shaft for microtunnelling will start on Wednesday.
The Bearspaw feeder main carries 60% of the city's drinking water.
The pipe ruptured twice in two years and is in bad condition.
City officials are expediting the project to replace the pipe.
Replacing the Bearspaw feeder main is Calgary's top priority.
The project was fast-tracked with a sole-source contract.
The total cost of the project is $439 million.
The second phase of the project will be complete in October.
More information on water restrictions will come this summer.
