Martin Lewis advises people to invest in tax-free shares ISAs

Money expert Martin Lewis thinks more people should have shares ISAs.
He encouraged people to invest on his ITV show.
Stocks and shares ISAs are tax-free and can hold many investments. You don't pay UK income tax or capital gains tax. You can invest up to £20,000 per year.
Martin said a shares ISA is tax-free and many people should have one. Investing feels risky, but avoiding risk also has risks. Inflation can reduce savings.
Martin Lewis presented his show after winning a BAFTA award.
He explained investing: put money somewhere to grow, but it might go down. Investing is not saving.
His rules: invest when you won't need the money for five years, pay off debts, and have a cash emergency fund.
Those considering a shares ISA should think about a 'passive' fund.
Martin showed what would have happened if you invested £1,000 ten years ago. The best savings account would have grown less than inflation. But £1,000 in the FTSE 100 would be £2,400 now.
Martin suggested starting with a fund, not individual stocks. A fund is a basket of investments. There are active and passive funds.
A viewer asked about protections for her money in a shares ISA. Martin said no, it's different from a cash ISA.
If you buy an individual share, you could lose all your money. But a fund is less likely to lose all its value.
