The network is bringing back Dalziel and Pascoe, which is inspired by Reginald Hill's novels and was previously adapted into an immensely successful television show that aired from 1996 to 2007.
The original series starred the late Warren Clarke and Colin Buchanan, running across 12 seasons on BBC. ITV has confirmed that the revival will present a fresh and contemporary take on the beloved British detective series.
Dalziel and Pascoe revolves around the relationship between seasoned detective Dalziel and the recently trained, rule-following DS Pascoe. Although their methods differ greatly, Dalziel and Pascoe work together to form a compelling partnership rooted in humor, warmth, and empathy, according to WalesOnline.
ITV's Head of Scripted Comedy, Nana Hughes, shared insights about the new series: "It’s a true honor to reintroduce Reginald Hill's cherished Dalziel and Pascoe to a new audience. Central to this series is the lasting, surprising chemistry between two distinct detectives, and we’re thrilled to delve into that dynamic."
The series has been ordered by BritBox, with Jon Farrar, Stephen Nye, and Lucie Wolfman serving as executive producers. Jon Farrar mentioned: "Dalziel and Pascoe has always explored tension, intellect, and the uneasy connection of opposites, brought together in the quest for truth.
"Their chemistry, humor, and moral insight perfectly enhance this intricately woven mystery. It’s a classic crime narrative that not only respects but enhances its legacy."
Jonathan Fisher, Managing Director of West Road Pictures, stated: "It is a significant privilege to re-envision Reginald Hill's legendary detective series for today’s audience. We aspire for viewers to fall in love with this unusual yet extraordinary duo once more. With a top-notch creative team in place, we are eager to begin on this series, which marks our fifth commission at West Road Pictures."
While the cast has yet to be revealed, ITV has confirmed that the new drama will consist of six episodes and is set to begin filming in spring 2026 across Northern England.
The original Dalziel And Pascoe, which ran from 1996 to 2007, was immensely well-received. The murder mystery series holds a 7.7 rating on IMDb, with many viewers praising it as a "masterpiece" and their favorite detective drama.
One review notes: "Every summer, they broadcast Midsomer Murders on Swedish television, and I once enjoyed that show until I discovered this masterpiece. Here, the characters and settings are more believable, the stories are more intricate and captivating, and the conclusions are not always unequivocal, which proves quite satisfying for those interested in thrillers. The ongoing Dalziel-Pascoe dynamic is arguably the best in its category, and Dalziel's one-liners can often leave you in stitches!"
Another reviewer added: "Love it! It's among my top five crime series (with New Tricks in first place, and this in second)."
