In this focus segment, let's look at the
0:03
beauty of Ca trù. During the 15th and
0:06
16th centuries, Ca trù was a
0:08
sophisticated art form reserved
0:11
exclusively for Confucian families and
0:13
the aristocracy. However, throughout
0:15
history, Ca trù has faced the risk of
0:18
disappearing, leading UNESCO to
0:20
designate it as an intangible cultural
0:23
heritage in need of urgent safeguarding
0:26
in October 2009. Today, many young
0:28
people are choosing to actively connect
0:31
with this heritage by using the language
0:33
of their generation.
0:40
The ancient art of Ca trù is finding a
0:42
digital revival in the hands of the
0:44
younger generation. Through creative
0:47
projects, young people are bringing
0:48
these traditional melodies onto social
0:51
media.
0:52
Their work is receiving huge praise from
0:54
both local and international viewers for
0:57
its deep cultural value.
1:03
At the Academy of Journalism and
1:05
Communication, young people are
1:07
discovering new ways to connect with
1:09
heritage, and they've come up with a
1:11
unique method to bring this
1:12
centuries-old art form back into the
1:14
digital spotlight.
1:18
Ca trù is an academic art form. If it's
1:20
remain confined to traditional
1:22
performance space, it is very difficult
1:25
to reach younger generations. Therefore,
1:27
our team has brought Ca trù onto YouTube
1:29
platforms through the most accessible
1:32
formats to bring this art closer to more
1:34
young people.
1:37
Beyond gaining public support, these
1:39
students have deeply moved the artists
1:41
who guarded this heritage for decades.
1:53
Ca trù is the soul and the essence of
1:55
our nation, handed down by thousands of
1:57
generations. I truly believe that young
2:00
people with their strengths in
2:01
creativity and information technology
2:04
will help that to live on forever within
2:06
Vietnam, Hanoi, and in the hearts of all
2:09
those who love this art form.
2:13
With their innovative mindset and
2:15
technological proficiency, young people
2:17
have transformed past heritages,
2:19
including Ca Tru, into products that are
2:22
now more relatable, engaging, and
2:24
vibrant. This has raised awareness of
2:27
Vietnamese culture among local youth
2:29
while simultaneously introducing our
2:31
heritage to the global stage.
2:36
Initiatives like Tieng Ca Nhip Phach
2:38
prove that the youth are now the active
2:40
heart of heritage preservation.
2:42
Supported by the strategic framework of
2:45
Resolution 80, Ca Tru is moving beyond
2:48
urgent safeguarding to become a vibrant
2:50
part of modern life.

3:01
>> To gain a broader perspective on how
3:03
Vietnam is preserving its cultural
3:05
heritage in the global context, our
3:08
reporter had a conversation with
3:10
Jonathan Baker, UNESCO Representative to
3:12
Vietnam, about the country's journey and
3:15
the pivotal role of the youth in his
3:18
this mission.
3:20
Thank you, Mr. Jonathan, for taking your
3:22
time with Vietnam today. Thank you for
3:24
having me.
3:25
Um what's your view on the Vietnam's
3:28
current approach to the preservation of
3:30
Ca Tru? So, I think Vietnam's approach
3:34
preserving Ca Tru is is really
3:36
fantastic. They've done an incredible
3:37
job.
3:38
For example, the creation of festivals
3:40
that are celebrating
3:42
this intangible cultural heritage
3:44
through a series of trainings that we've
3:46
worked also with Vietnam to ensure
3:49
it happens all over the country and and
3:51
and
3:51
this this knowledge both from these
3:54
practitioners, the specialists that know
3:56
the most about it, but also transmit
3:58
that to the younger generations. Well,
4:01
we are seeing more young people engaging
4:03
with cultural heritage in creative ways.
4:06
So, how do you view the role of youth in
4:09
safeguarding its intangible cultural
4:11
heritage such as ca trù?
4:14
So, I think the the role of young people
4:16
is is very important because for UNESCO
4:19
intangible cultural heritage needs to be
4:21
living heritage. And and who better than
4:23
young people to bring to life intangible
4:26
cultural heritage. You know, young
4:27
people of course have
4:30
now know how to use social media and
4:32
technology in a way that maybe older
4:34
generations are not
4:35
that accomplished with. And so, doing
4:38
that is I think brought intangible
4:39
cultural heritage to a
4:41
to a broader part of the population, not
4:43
only young people, but all of Vietnam.
4:46
And so, I think young people have helped
4:47
to promote intangible cultural heritage
4:49
through through social media, through
4:51
technology in a way that hadn't been
4:53
done before.
4:55
Under the UNESCO's framework
4:57
safeguarding, you know, cultural
4:59
heritage, what more should Vietnam
5:01
prioritize to ensure its long-term
5:03
sustainability in preserving the
5:06
intangible cultural heritage? So, I
5:08
think there's there's a few things that
5:11
we would advocate that Vietnam should
5:13
should be doing.
5:14
One of them is to continue to have this
5:16
intergenerational
5:18
knowledge, this intergenerational
5:19
transmission. That's one of the key
5:21
aspects of intangible cultural heritage
5:23
because you have to preserve it as part
5:24
of the social fabric of Vietnamese
5:26
society. So, this intergenerational
5:28
knowledge, especially between the the
5:30
the practitioners, the the ones that
5:32
know the most about
5:34
ca trù, and the the younger generations
5:36
to be able to transmit that. And to do
5:38
that
5:39
you know, you can do it through
5:40
different
5:41
ways. You can also do it through through
5:42
festivals, their moments of the year.
5:43
Another aspect of course is training to
5:46
continue to preserve this this knowledge
5:48
about the true to a better understanding
5:50
about how you know the the practitioners
5:52
themselves to have more practitioners
5:55
so that their people are able to see it
5:56
and then enjoy it
5:58
different parts of moments of the year
5:59
and for many years to come.
6:01
Well, thank you so much for your
6:03
insights. Thank you.
