Plane Has Emergency After Fire Starts

A plane turned back to Gatwick Airport after a fire started on board just after take-off.
The crew of TAP Air Portugal TP1329 sent a distress signal after smelling something burning and seeing smoke from a luggage compartment.
Passengers got off the plane at Gatwick, where emergency workers checked the plane. The fire was caused by an e-cigarette.
The Portuguese air safety office said the crew smelled something burning before reaching 10,000ft and told the pilots.
The plane looped back to Gatwick.
The crew put out the fire with a fire extinguisher after some passengers stood up.
A piece of luggage in the overhead bin was on fire, but the crew put it out quickly.
The plane returned to Gatwick after 14 minutes, and firefighters checked the area and removed the luggage.
The crew and passengers were okay, and the plane was checked before flying to Porto. The fire was caused by an e-cigarette in the luggage.
Investigators showed a photo of the burned luggage, which could have caused a disaster if not for the crew.
The incident happened on February 8, but the investigation results were only made public later. The plane can carry up to 180 people.
The plane landed safely in Porto, three hours late, after being cleared to fly.
