Aybar and Duy are part of a large investigation into a transnational trafficking ring with 227 defendants.

The case started when customs found over 11 kilograms of drugs in toothpaste tubes at an airport in March 2023.

Andrea Aybar was born in Spain but grew up in Vietnam. She speaks Vietnamese, English, and Spanish, and was a model in northern Vietnam from 2012 to 2014.

On November 9, 2024, police found Aybar and friends using drugs at her apartment. It was the second day in a row they had used drugs there.

Police found more methamphetamine and equipment for smoking at Aybar's apartment. Aybar said she told Duy to buy the equipment for her.

Aybar started using drugs in 2020. She usually bought them from a friend, Nguyen Phuoc Bao Loc, for $19 to $38.

Aybar paid Duy to buy drugs from Loc. Duy also used drugs with Aybar, including the day before the police raid.

Aybar was arrested after police followed the money and suppliers from a case involving flight attendants. Two men are believed to be the leaders of the network.

The flight attendants were not charged because they did not know they were carrying drugs.

The authorities have found nearly $1.1 billion in drug transactions, closed many branches of the network, and seized a large amount of narcotics and weapons.
