Big Change to UK Driving Licences

The UK government is making a big change to driving licences that will affect over 40 million people.
Soon, people can store their driving licence on their phone using a new government app. This app will also be used as ID. The government says this could save about £45 billion. The digital licence will be part of the Gov.uk App and Wallet, making it easy to access important documents.
Supermarkets will also use the digital ID to check people's age when they buy things. When this was announced in 2025, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said it would be very helpful for people who use their driving licence as ID.
This new system makes things faster, easier, and more secure. The government is making public services better for everyone.
The Gov.UK Wallet works on both iOS and Android phones and will change how people store and show their ID and car documents. The digital driving licence will be the same as the plastic card and can be used as proof of identity.
People who already have a plastic licence do not have to give it up. They can still get a physical licence, and the digital one is optional.
The digital licence app has many benefits, including being able to see driving records, check endorsements, and renew licences all in one place. People can also see penalty points, and the app will have strong security to prevent fake licences.
The GOV.UK Wallet is not available yet, but some people will be able to use it soon. The government says people can use it to store digital documents safely and show them to prove their age, identity, or eligibility for services.
Digital documents can be used like paper or card ones, but using GOV.UK Wallet is optional. The government will make it available to everyone soon.
