This situation arises partly because securing a spot is no longer merely about finishing in the top four for Premier League teams, as additional slots are now available. To decide which countries gain these extra opportunities, UEFA evaluates the overall performance of their clubs in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.
The average is derived by dividing a league's total coefficient score by the number of its clubs competing in European tournaments.
This season, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Newcastle have all participated in the event.
Among these six teams, only Newcastle found itself in a playoff position, while the others managed to secure automatic advancement into the knockout stages.
Now that the group stage of the Champions League is complete, it's becoming clearer which nations will likely obtain an additional spot for the next season.
Currently, England leads the coefficient standings with 180,625 points, followed by Germany with 107,000. Portugal holds the third position with 14,700 points, and Spain is in fourth with 14,375.
The two countries whose clubs achieve the most favorable outcomes across the three European tournaments this season will be granted European Performance Spots (EPS).
Given England's leading status in the rankings, a fifth-place finish in the Premier League could possibly secure a Champions League spot for United instead of relegating them to the Europa League.
Newcastle took advantage of this setup last season.
Based on United's current league standing, they would lock in a Champions League position as it stands, residing in fourth place.
However, numerous matches remain before the season concludes. Interim manager Michael Carrick has already cautioned his squad against any sense of overconfidence.
Next up is a home match against Fulham in the Premier League, where they aim to achieve three consecutive wins and maintain Carrick's flawless record since taking the reins from caretaker Darren Fletcher.
