Join the Effort to Track Insect Populations

Motorists in south-east England are invited to participate in a unique nature study by monitoring the number of insects that collide with their vehicles.

The Bugs Matter project, a collaborative effort between Kent Wildlife Trust and Buglife, is set to commence on Wednesday and conclude on September 30.

This research aims to gain a deeper understanding of the well-being of flying insects, which play a vital role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystem.

According to Andrew Whitehouse, Buglife's head of operations, residents of Kent, Surrey, and Sussex are particularly encouraged to take part, given the region's exceptional biodiversity.

Preliminary data from the Bugs Matter survey, which involves counting insect splatters on vehicle number plates, has revealed a startling 59% decline in flying insect populations between 2021 and 2025.

The survey's scope has now been expanded to include France, as announced by Rosie Bleet, the ecological evidence and citizen science lead at Kent Wildlife Trust.

Bleet expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, citing Kent's strategic location as a gateway between the UK and the continent, making it an ideal next step for the project.

By broadening the survey's duration and geographic reach, researchers anticipate gathering a more comprehensive dataset, providing valuable insights into the challenges faced by insect populations.

Whitehouse emphasized the crucial functions that insects perform, including crop pollination, pest control, waste decomposition, and nutrient recycling, highlighting their importance within the ecosystem.

Insects also serve as a vital food source for various animals, such as birds, small mammals, and fish, underscoring their significance in maintaining the delicate balance of nature.

The potential consequences of an insect population collapse are dire, with Whitehouse warning that the planet's ecological systems would be severely impacted without these tiny creatures.
