0:01So I came out of the house this
0:02morning and realized that,
0:05we're a little bit snowed in.
0:07It snowed all day yesterday.
0:10And, you can see the van is
0:14a little bit snowed in.
0:16In English, when you say that
0:17you're snowed in, it means
0:18that you can't leave until
0:20you clean your driveway
0:21or clear your driveway.
0:23So, that's what I'm going
0:25Jen's coming out with her camera
0:27and the drone, and I'm going to
0:29teach you some, English words
0:30and phrases that we use when
0:32we're, snowed in, when we have
0:34to clear our driveway or clean
0:36our driveway in order to go
0:38I think this will be a fun video.
0:39It'll be a little bit different,
0:42kind of a different sort
0:42of English lesson than normal.
0:44But, it'll certainly be
0:54So when it's this cold, I do have
0:56to keep my tractor plugged in.
0:59So if you don't know the word
1:00for this, this is an extension
1:05into the block heater
1:06on the tractor that hopefully,
1:09makes it easier to start.
1:10Before I started, though, I should
1:11point out some tractor parts.
1:13This is the front end loader.
1:16So this is what I'm going
1:17to use to clear the driveway,
1:18to clean the driveway, I keep
1:20using two different verbs.
1:21It has hydraulic rams and
1:25So it can go up and down.
1:26And that allows me to scoop
1:28up the snow or scrape
1:29the snow or push the snow.
1:31We'll get to those verbs
1:32in a little bit, but right now
1:34I'm going to see if it will start.
1:36So I have my key here.
1:38When it's this cold, I hope
1:40the block heater kept it warm.
1:53So there are four things
1:54I'm going to do with this
1:55tractor, and I'm going
1:56to teach you those four verbs.
1:58And those verbs are good
1:59for other things as well.
2:01up snow with a tractor.
2:02I am going to push the snow
2:05So I'm going to put the bucket down
2:07and I'm going to push the snow.
2:08And you'll see it all
2:11to scoop up the snow.
2:13I'm going to scoop the snow
2:15You can see how when I move my
2:17hands like this, I'm mimicking
2:18what the bucket will do.
2:20And I'm going to then lift it.
2:21And then I'm going to find
2:23a place where I can dump the snow.
2:25I'm going to tip the bucket
2:27and the snow will fall out.
2:28I'll either put it on an existing
2:30pile, or I'll start a new pile.
2:32And then when I'm all done or
2:34almost done cleaning the driveway,
2:35I will then scrape the driveway.
2:37I'll put the bucket down
2:39and tip it just a little bit
2:40so it kind of does a nice
2:42final job on the driveway.
2:44I will scrape up the last little
2:45bit of snow, and then I will dump
2:47that somewhere else as well.
2:48So what am I going to do?
2:50I'm going to push the snow.
2:51I'm going to scoop the snow up.
2:54I'm going to dump the snow,
2:55and when I'm all done, I'm going
2:57to to scrape the driveway so
2:58it looks really, really nice.
3:00Oh, and I said push the snow.
3:02You can also say plow the snow.
3:04Even though this tractor isn't
3:07really a snow plow, sometimes
3:10people use that verb as well.
3:12So I am pushing the snow,
3:13but I'm also plowing the snow
3:15or plowing the driveway.
3:16So how many verbs is that now?
3:18I'm clearing the driveway.
3:19I'm cleaning the driveway.
3:20I'm plowing the driveway.
3:22I'm doing a lot just to get
3:23this driveway nice and clean.
3:29So we also sometimes use the verb
3:31to dig out or to dig yourself out.
3:34So right now, even though this is
3:36a tractor and not a shovel,
3:37usually you use a shovel to dig.
3:40I can still say that I am
3:41spending time digging us out.
3:44I've decided to get up this morning
3:45and make an English lesson and to
3:47dig us out so that later today
3:50we can get out of the driveway.
3:52Okay, so just so you know,
3:54this is a snow drift.
3:56I'm not sure if you can see it.
3:58When the wind blows over the shed,
3:59the snow accumulates here.
4:01But this over here, by the way,
4:04this is a snow drift as well.
4:08This is a snow pile because this
4:10is where I dumped snow when
4:11I last cleaned the driveway.
4:13So you might be wondering,
4:15how do I control the bucket?
4:16Well, I have my control
4:19This will lift the loader up.
4:21This will put the loader down.
4:24It will go down when it's off.
4:25This will tilt the bucket
4:27back, so it will do this
4:29to the bucket, and this
4:31will tilt the bucket forward.
4:33So in order to control the loader
4:35and the bucket, I use this lever
4:37to lift the loader up, to put the
4:39loader down, to tilt the bucket
4:41back, and to tilt the bucket
4:47And, you might be wondering, why
4:49didn't I just use the snow blower?
4:51I do have a snowblower.
4:53A snowblower is a machine that,
4:55well, it kind of eats snow
4:57and then shoots it out
4:58onto the side of the driveway.
4:59And, I could have used
5:01the snowblower, but maybe that's
5:03lesson in the future.
5:04I do really like cleaning
5:07the driveway with my tractor.
5:09could see on my face.
5:10It just brings me joy.
5:13the snowblower next time.
5:15But for this time, this was
5:16really, really fun for me.
5:18Well, hey, thank you so much
5:19for watching this, English lesson
5:21about cleaning a driveway.
5:22I hope you were able to learn
5:24some new words and phrases.
5:25I do want to thank my lovely
5:26assistant Jen, who came out in
