0:00this post-it note holds the secret to
0:03learning english and i say secret
0:05because
0:06no one's told you but i'm going to tell
0:08you exactly how to really learn english
0:11get ready
0:15hi my name is chris and if you're new
0:17here
0:18welcome to my channel i give free
0:20english education lessons i mean free i
0:23don't charge anything i don't want your
0:25money
0:26well
0:27no i don't want your money
0:31but you know something every day i get
0:33questions from students here on youtube
0:36or on my facebook page on my facebook
0:38group chris
0:39how do i learn english and usually it's
0:42not in english it's in a foreign
0:44language it's in their native language
0:46but they say chris
0:48how do i learn english
0:51and
0:52i was kind of surprised like
0:54i always answer
0:56but the thing is is this question keeps
0:58coming up and i was wondering today so i
1:01went on youtube and i said how to learn
1:04english and you know what
1:07none of the first videos are right
1:11they all
1:12they all assume that you know english
1:15which is crazy if you're trying to learn
1:18english you're not starting at the place
1:21where these videos tell you to start
1:24really odds are the odds are good that
1:28right now you don't understand what i'm
1:30saying hopefully you're using the
1:32subtitle
1:34translated into your native language and
1:37you can understand me that way because
1:40i'm going to tell you how to learn
1:41english and it's free it's free
1:44completely free you can google all of
1:46these resources i have them available
1:49for free there are other teachers who
1:51have them for free but here
1:53this post-it note seriously has
1:55everything you need to know to learn
1:57english
1:58so
1:59step one i'll put it maybe on the screen
2:01here behind me
2:03step one
2:05what type of english do you want to
2:07speak
2:09really that is the most important
2:12question do i want to speak american
2:15english do i want to speak british
2:17english south african english australian
2:20english new zealand english
2:22is that really a thing i think they
2:24speak english but
2:26would you just call it english i don't
2:27know
2:28anyways you have to choose which one
2:32okay
2:33me personally i speak american english i
2:36have a very clear northern accent so you
2:39can hear everything i say
2:42but you have to decide what do you want
2:45to speak
2:46cool once you make that decision you go
2:49to step two which was
2:52phonics it's the same in any language
2:55you must learn phonics but you must
2:58learn it for the language you chose
3:01british phonics and american phonics are
3:04not quite the same
3:06they all have different sounds so that's
3:08why i said you must choose american
3:11english british english or a different
3:13english
3:14so you you're going to learn phonics
3:17you're going to learn
3:18the initial sounds okay a b c d what do
3:22they sound like okay after you learn
3:24that you learn the short vowels don't do
3:28it in any other order learn the short
3:30vowels wow it's really hot in here today
3:364k you're going to see me sweating
3:40so you have to learn the short vowels
3:43okay once you learn the short vowel
3:45sounds you go to the long vowel sounds
3:48yeah the long vowel sounds now you've
3:52learned most of phonics right there now
3:54it's the tricky things right the two
3:57letter consonants that's what you learn
4:00after you've learned the vowels why
4:03because words with two-letter consonants
4:06have short vowels and long vowels
4:09yeah it's the order
4:11after you've learned your two-letter
4:14consonants the fifth step is to learn
4:18long vowels for the weird ones like e e
4:21e a
4:22double o's that kind of stuff okay
4:26that's the last bit of phonics
4:29that's it's not so hard so far right i
4:31have a free phonics course i'll link it
4:33down below 70 video lessons you can
4:36learn american english only if you want
4:39to learn american english
4:41not if you want to learn british don't
4:43take it if you want to learn british
4:45english okay but i'll put the i'll put
4:47my videos down below but you can just
4:50search british
4:52phonics
4:53and take these lessons they're all free
4:56pretty sure they're pretty sure they're
4:57free mine are but
5:00after you've learned phonics the next
5:02step step three on my little list here
5:05is basic sentence patterns
5:09i'm not gonna say grammar don't learn
5:11grammar that is a huge
5:13mistake you know why grammar is hard
5:17really in america we don't really learn
5:20grammar until grade five
5:22yeah we already can speak english before
5:26we learn grammar
5:28so if you think about this
5:30your teachers they teach you grammar and
5:32you just can't seem to learn english why
5:36because backwards you don't learn
5:39grammar until you can speak english
5:42sounds sounds kind of weird right but
5:44it's true
5:46look at children children can speak
5:48english and they've never heard of a
5:50noun or a pronoun or any of the
5:52complicated stuff like superlatives and
5:55well it's not really complicated but
5:57that kind of stuff they don't know what
5:59it is and you don't need to know it
6:01either not yet
6:03okay
6:04not yet
6:06first you have to learn basic sentence
6:08patterns just like the child does they
6:11learn this is this that is that those
6:14are those i want this i like that
6:19cool that's what you have to learn these
6:21basic patterns why because even me who's
6:25fluent in english i still use these
6:28basic patterns every day
6:30these basic patterns make up most of the
6:34english language
6:36they make up most of the sentence
6:38structures that you will use
6:40throughout speaking
6:42so
6:43that is step number three basic sentence
6:46patterns now
6:48okay
6:49once you've learned the basic sentence
6:51patterns guess what you can speak
6:54english you can read english you can
6:56kind of understand english
6:59cool right
7:01it's not so complicated yet
7:04so number four what do we have to do now
7:06well now that we understand and know
7:09english basic english we have to improve
7:12it
7:13now this is where all of those other how
7:15to learn english videos come in they say
7:17oh you have to learn reading and
7:19listening and
7:21well if you haven't learned the
7:23foundation english yet you can't do it
7:26right it's kind of crazy
7:28step four is this foundation level
7:32english we improve
7:34what we already know
7:36now how do we do this
7:37i am a big proponent i say read reading
7:40is the greatest way to learn anything
7:43okay but especially english if you read
7:46books with dialogue with people talking
7:50you learn how to speak
7:52right maybe you don't speak but you
7:54learn what you're supposed to say
7:56okay cool so reading is super important
8:00right but what else let me look at my
8:02note here writing yeah writing we need
8:05to learn reading
8:06writing we need to learn how to write
8:09down what we've just learned through
8:11reading right
8:13we learn this but how do we improve our
8:16writing oh we learn vocabulary right
8:19that's the third thing we need
8:21cool so we've learned reading we're
8:24learning writing we're learning
8:25vocabulary
8:27but that's not enough right we need to
8:30learn listening skills right we need to
8:32learn how to hear better
8:36okay
8:37now what goes along with this at the
8:38very end is speaking these are kind of
8:41one two three four five five skills
8:44these are the five
8:46main skills that we need to learn to
8:48improve
8:50english not learn english to improve
8:53english
8:54very important everyone will say learn
8:57these five skills to speak english and
8:59be good in english no
9:01you have to learn english first and
9:03these are how you improve your english
9:06okay now let's say you finished a course
9:10which i'll link below mine
9:12on all five of these things you've got
9:15basically
9:17basically you've got basically
9:18that sounds terrible
9:21you're basically good at english okay
9:24you're basically good at english are you
9:26perfect no have we learned any grammar
9:29no i don't like teaching grammar grammar
9:31is not necessary it's it's an academic
9:35skill that you only need to learn if
9:38you're worried about academic testing if
9:40you want to learn english you don't
9:42really need to focus
9:44on grammar those basic sentence patterns
9:47and reading and writing and all of your
9:49practice
9:50they basically teach you english okay
9:53now step
9:54five this is the last big step okay
9:57now while you're still reading and
10:00writing and learning vocabulary and
10:02speaking and listening the fifth step
10:05is to practice your conversation skills
10:08now everything i've listed has been
10:11completely free
10:12okay everything i've listed has been
10:14completely free now the cool thing about
10:17the conversation skills is that it can
10:20be free too if you've got a friend who
10:22speaks english talk to them
10:25if you know someone who is on the
10:28internet and they want to do language
10:30exchange cool talk to them right make
10:33sure they're a fluent person don't
10:35don't talk to someone who's got
10:37english right talk to someone who's
10:39fluent you know a native speaker in
10:42american british or whatever accent you
10:44want speak to a native okay of that
10:48specific language don't change right
10:51people always change they'll listen to
10:52british english and american english and
10:55i sound funny well yeah you're speaking
10:57two different styles of english so don't
11:00do that
11:01speak to a native right language
11:03exchanges are all over the place they're
11:05all free
11:06or mostly free usually they're
11:08completely free i've never seen one paid
11:11or
11:12if you're really shy and you really want
11:14to just
11:16nail it you don't want to waste time
11:17with maybe okay language exchange you
11:20get a tutor this is the point where you
11:22actually pay for something but only
11:25only if you really want it only if you
11:27really need it
11:29i'm really it's really hot in here
11:32super professional
11:35i turned the air conditioner off because
11:36it's too noisy
11:39okay so to recap okay because i don't
11:42want to go crazy long here
11:44step one
11:45what kind of english do you want to
11:47learn
11:48british american
11:49choose
11:50choose because you can't change okay
11:53if you change you have to start over
11:54again that's the crazy thing you have to
11:56start over because the phonics will be
11:59different step two phonics
12:01step three
12:03basic sentence structures step four
12:07improve
12:08all of these skills by reading writing
12:12vocabulary
12:13speaking and listening skills
12:17and step five
12:18is to practice your conversation
12:21practice your conversation skills with a
12:24native speaker whether it's through a
12:26free language exchange
12:28or with an actual paid tutor your choice
12:32that's how you learn english
12:34right that's it that's the basic formula
12:38for learning english now what if i want
12:40to learn grammar
12:42go for it
12:43if you really want to learn grammar go
12:45for it that would be somewhere in step
12:47four but if you're not worried about
12:50academic testing you're not worried
12:52about knowing what an adverb and an
12:54adjective is you just want to be able to
12:56communicate
12:58if you need the grammar go ahead and
13:00learn it in step four
13:02if you don't need the grammar don't
13:04worry about it the average native
13:07speaker couldn't tell you a lot of these
13:09crazy
13:11grammar skill rules
13:13really we don't know them the average
13:15one doesn't know them i know them
13:17because i teach them but before i was
13:20teaching grammar
13:22i didn't know them i knew some but
13:25they're really not that important
13:28you don't really need to know
13:29why the engine in your car works unless
13:32you plan on fixing it right you just
13:35need to know how to drive and take care
13:36of it basic stuff
13:39same with english you just need to know
13:41the basics
13:42and get better at them
13:44i hope this helps you this is how you
13:46learn english okay google if you're
13:49keywording my video this is how you
13:51learn english in 2020 in 2021 and beyond
13:56until they learn how to hook a computer
13:59into your brain and directly teach you
14:01the language this is how you should
14:03learn english or any language really

14:11all five of these steps down below
