I’m headed towards Tavolara,
0:03
off the coast of Sardinia,
0:05
a little island that supposedly is the smallest kingdom in the world.
0:11
I’m going to meet the king...
0:16
who has a restaurant.
0:18
Named for its distinctive table-shaped mountain,
0:22
Tavolara is only a quarter of a mile wide, and less than three miles from the coast.
0:29
Today, it’s home to only eleven residents.
0:33
And a seafront restaurant run by its most illustrious inhabitant.
0:38
Tonino.
0:39
[in Italian] - Hi. - Hello.
0:42
[in Italian] So...
0:44
Ninety-two-year-old Tonino Bertoleoni is the King of Tavolara.
0:49
[in Italian] Beautiful day.
0:50
[in Italian] Yes!
0:51
[in Italian] Today is perfect.
0:53
[in Italian] Yes, yes, yes.
0:54
[in Italian] - Luckily. - Yes.
0:57
His family have laid claim to this tiny island
0:59
since his great-great-grandfather took the reins in 1836.
1:05
[in Italian] So, it was Giuseppe Bertoleoni,
1:09
my ancestor
1:10
of Genoese origin.
1:12
And one day he decided to come to Sardinia
1:15
with his boat.
1:17
He saw this mountain here -
1:19
[in Italian] Yes.
1:19
and settled in the island of Tavolara.
1:24
Though no official records exist of Giuseppe’s arrival on the island,
1:28
his storied reign began after an improbable encounter
1:31
with the King of Sardinia,
1:33
Charles Albert of Savoy.
1:37
[in Italian] The Savoys
1:39
heard about this Bertoleoni who had taken these islands,
1:43
and wanted to get to know this Giuseppe Bertoleoni.
1:46
Giuseppe Bertoleoni
1:47
told King Charles Albert,
1:51
he told him, "You are the king of Piedmont and Sardinia,
1:53
but I am the king of Tavolara."
1:57
This joke.
1:59
And King Charles Albert, when he heard this,
2:01
that he said this joke,
2:03
he said, "Well, I will name him King of Tavolara for real."
2:09
He took pen and paper and wrote,
2:12
“Giuseppe Bertoleoni, born" — and so on — "King of Tavolara.”
2:17
In the 1860s, during the Italian Unification,
2:20
Sardinia was absorbed into the Kingdom of Italy.
2:24
But Tavolara maintained its independence,
2:26
producing another five kings, and two queens.
2:30
Today, Tonino is the living legacy of this two hundred-year-old fairytale.
2:36
But to find out how this kingdom has managed to stay sovereign,
2:40
I’m going to meet the rest of the family at a royal banquet...
2:43
of sorts.
2:46
The crown jewel of the kingdom is the family restaurant, Da Tonino.
2:51
They serve whatever they can get their hands on,
2:54
meaning seafood.
2:57
Giuseppe and I join the rest of the royals for appetizers and formal introductions.
3:03
[in Italian] -Cheers. -Cheers.
3:08
We’re starting with spaghetti with clams and bottarga,
3:11
which is dried Sardinian mullet roe.
3:15
[in Italian] Delicious.
3:17
[in Italian] I love bottarga.
3:19
[in Italian] Oh, yes.
3:20
Mmmm.
3:22
This is really good.
3:29
[in Italian] This is my grandfather.
3:30
[in Italian] Grandfather.
3:32
Brothers, wife, and grandchildren.
3:36
This photograph…
3:38
Queen Victoria
3:40
had it in Buckingham Palace.
3:41
And it has written on it:
3:44
"The smallest kingdom in the world,
3:47
Tavolara Island."
3:51
This black and white portrait is the family’s most prized possession.
3:55
Amazing. I love that.
3:57
[in Italian] Yes.
3:57
Proof that their royal lineage was once respected around the world.
4:04
Oh, my!
4:06
Gorgeous. Gorgeous.
4:08
Oh my god.
4:09
[in Italian] Thank you.
4:12
[in Italian] Dad.
4:13
[in Italian] - Just a bit. - What can I give you?
4:15
[in Italian] Okay, that is enough.
4:17
Okay.
4:18
[in Italian] Delicious.
4:19
[in Italian] - Anyway, it is good, isn't it? - Delicious.
4:22
In 1946,
4:24
Italy voted to abolish its monarchy and depose the King of Savoy,
4:28
rendering Tavolara’s royal recognition meaningless.
4:32
Which put an end to the island’s independence.
4:35
[in Italian] To me, this is a kingdom.
4:37
[in Italian] - Yes. - Of course.
4:38
[in Italian] - Yes, yes, yes.
4:40
Yeah.
4:43
[in Italian] - Thank you. - Thank you.
4:46
[in Italian] King!
4:47
[in Italian] - Thank you. - Thank you.
4:51
Kingdom or no Kingdom,
4:53
Tonino is still the beloved ruler of this little paradise.
4:58
Just ask his royal subjects.
5:02
A Sardinian writer once said,
5:04
‘if Sardinia is an island,
5:06
then every Sardinian
5:07
is an island unto themselves.’
5:11
Its isolation has given traditions both weird and wonderful.
5:16
And some might say,
5:17
it’s even made fairy tales
5:19
come true.
