Three rare 50p coins could be worth over £2,000

An expert shared some valuable 50p coins to look for.

People are being asked to check their spare change for three ordinary coins that could be worth more than their value. These 50p pieces could be worth £2,280.

The coins are only worth more if they have errors or dates that make them scarce. A numismatic specialist explained what collectors should look for.

He said: 'Comment if you have these coins, they are worth serious money. But pay attention.'

He talked about a 50p coin from 2017 with Benjamin Bunny. This coin is usually worth its face value.

Some of these coins have a flaw that makes them sought-after. 'The 2017 Benjamin Bunny 50p is usually just worth face value unless you have a rare rotation error version,' he said. 'The error Benjamin Bunny coin has the Queen's head printed facing the wrong direction.'

When a coin is flipped, the Queen's head should be facing left, but on a rotation error coin, it's different.

Such a coin could sell for £30, roughly 60 times its face value.

These 50p pieces could fetch up to £2,280.

He recommended watching out for another 50p coin from the 2012 Olympic Games. The design features a child's drawing of a high jump competitor.

However, the 2009 edition is more valuable, worth £250 or more. He explained: '2.2 million of the athletics 50p coin were minted in 2011, but this earlier version was minted in 2009.'

If you have the 2009 coin, you can sell it for £250 plus. The specialist highlighted a coin from the 2012 London Olympics.

The error Benjamin Bunny coin has the Queen's head printed facing the wrong direction.

The aquatics 50p coin displays a swimmer, but it's only valuable if the lines depicting water obscure the swimmer's face.

These lines appear only on the earliest editions from 2011. He said: 'If you find an aquatic 50p error coin with lines over the face, it could be worth a small fortune.'

A small handful of the original design was circulated, but it was adapted quickly. With so few of the original design out there, the coin's value has increased significantly.
