Plan to bring more beavers back takes step forward

Beavers may be released in a new area soon.

Beavers were reintroduced in Cumbria in 2020, and now Forestry England has been invited to make a full application to release them in Ennerdale.

The plan is to release 30 adult beavers, possibly with their kits, which could total up to 50.

Forestry England's project lead, Hayley Dauben, says beavers will bring many benefits to the area.

Beavers are originally from the UK but were hunted to extinction in the 16th Century.

Forestry England had plans for beavers in Ennerdale before, but they were put on hold due to concerns about fish.

The first beaver release is now hoped to be in September 2027.

Beavers are wanted on rivers because of the habitats they create.

Their dams can help control water flow and keep the water clean.

Beavers will bring many benefits and create habitats we don't often see.

Forestry England can protect specific trees from beavers if needed.

The application will be submitted by late 2026 and may take four months to be assessed.

The project is asking landowners to help find 20 possible release sites.
