0:00Hello, everyone.
0:01My name is F@nny.
0:02And in this video, I'm gonna talk to you about the ‘Silent B’ letter in English.
0:09Now, there are many words containing the letter B
0:13And sometimes, for some reason, this B is silent.
0:19Now, let's take a few examples.
0:22First, we have the word ‘climb’.
0:26Now there's a ‘b’.
0:28You can see it when you spell the word,
0:31it ends with the letter ‘B’.
0:33But can you hear it?
0:35Listen to me. ‘climb’.
0:38No, you can't. You can't hear the letter ‘B’.
0:41Because it's a silent 'B’.
0:44Another example,
0:46would be the word ‘bomb’.
0:49I know you're thinking of the spelling.
0:52There's a ‘B’ at the end of this word.
0:54But again, it's a silent B.
0:58In fact, most of the time in English, when a short word ends with the letters ‘mb',
1:05the ‘b’ is silent.
1:09Now another example,
1:12the word ‘debt’.
1:15Most of my students pronounce it ‘debt’.
1:19Because they know the spelling of the word
1:21and there's a ‘b’ before this ‘t’.
1:24But it's a silent B, guys.
1:26It's not pronounced, so you actually say ‘Det’.
1:32Now for longer words, again, the letter ‘B’
1:37is sometimes silent, not always.
1:41For example, if I say the word ‘plumber’,
1:45it's a silent B.
1:47It's not pronounced ‘plum-ber'. It's spelled with a ‘B’, but the ‘B’ is silent.
1:53But, if I say the word ‘crumble’,
1:58the ‘b’ is not silent.
2:00You can clearly hear the sound ‘b’, ‘crumble’.
2:04Okay?
2:05So it's not always silent.
2:09Another example would be the word ‘subtle’.
2:13Now ‘subtle’ is spelled with a ‘B’, but the ‘B’ is silent.
2:19Unlike the word ‘subtext‘, ‘subtext’ is spelled with a ‘B’,
2:25but the ‘B’ is pronounced.
2:29I know English is a difficult language, but you will make it, guys.
2:34It's just about practice.
2:36So let's practice together, shall we?
2:38I've got a list of the most common words containing the silent B.
