0:00Oh, I'm so happy you're here.
0:02>> Thank you. Me, too. It's so nice to be
0:04>> Oh, I'm such a huge fan of your work.
0:12>> What a world we're living in, right? Oh,
0:15God. You're just a bright light. Thank
0:18>> You had quite the year last year.
0:19>> It was a crazy year.
0:21>> Crazy year. You appeared in Omary.
0:24>> You were nominated for an Emmy for
0:27>> Yeah. And you starred in Richard II.
0:31>> I also lost a dog and a cat.
0:36>> it was a murder suicide.
0:43um No. And nothing the deaths had
0:46nothing to do with each other.
0:48>> Oh, Michael Yuri. Everyone, I think we
0:50can wrap it up now. I think we got it.
0:52That was You can't You can't top that
0:56>> Oh my god. was like some real highs and
0:58some real lows, but uh yeah, kind of a
1:01>> You are such a busy man. Here's my my
1:03big question is uh which loved one are
1:06you actively avoiding in your life
1:08>> that work all the time.
1:10>> I'm just working nonstop.
1:12>> Yeah. Yeah. It's It's great to not be
1:14home when you live with someone like
1:19my partner. He's amazing. He's in the
1:20>> I met him. He really is amazing. I know
1:23you're lying. He's the best. Um, most of
1:26us fell in love with you from Ugly
1:28>> Uh, you were such a standout in that
1:31>> I just heard recently that originally
1:34your character was only supposed to be
1:35in one episode. Yeah.
1:38>> Yeah. So, I played Vanessa Williams
1:40assistant on the show. We worked at a
1:42fashion magazine and she the idea was
1:44that she was such a tyrant of a boss
1:46that every episode she'd have a new
1:49assistant. Like they they always quit or
1:51got fired. And so I wasn't I was only in
1:54the pilot and I knew that and and you
1:57know I was a co-star. I was not a you
2:00>> series regular or anything. And um and
2:03and so because I think because I was
2:05also really young and I think because I
2:08thought there was no chance of moving
2:10forward with this I just tried anything.
2:12I would do anything and made a lot of
2:15big choices. And um one of them was I
2:19thought it would be really because they
2:20always put me right behind Vanessa, you
2:22know, when we would come into a room or
2:24whatever. I thought it would be really
2:25funny if I just sort of physically did
2:28her. So like if she tossed her hair, I
2:32would toss my hair. As she sat down
2:35slowly, I would sit down slowly. And she
2:36had no idea I was doing that because I
2:38was behind her. And someone told her I
2:42was doing that. Someone went up and was
2:44like, they were like, "Hey, V, you know
2:45what that queen's doing behind you?" And
2:48she was like, "What? What?" And and then
2:50she came over to me and she was like,
2:52"Hey, I hear you're doing me behind me."
3:01and I was like, I'm going to get fired."
3:02And uh I said, "Yeah, sorry. I thought
3:05it would be funny if I kind of
3:06physically emulated you behind you. And
3:10she said, "That's great. What else can I
3:14>> And she immediately like gave me all of
3:17this agency and I'm pitching her ideas
3:20and she's like, "Stand closer. You'll be
3:22in the shot." I didn't know where the
3:23cameras were, you know, and they put me
3:26in the cast photo by the end of the
3:30>> Yeah. It was so special. So special.
3:33She's amazing. But she's the greatest.
3:35>> Oh, that makes me love her even more.
3:37And you for take it's just also such a
3:39great thing to remember. Take big
3:40swings, make big choices, like take
3:42advantage. And it totally paid off.
3:44>> Yeah, cuz they told us, you know, when I
3:46was getting out of drama school, they
3:47were like, they were like, nobody ever
3:49gets a series regular job off of a guest
3:51star. So when you go do a guest star,
3:52just do a guest star. Don't don't try
3:53don't swing for the fences. It'll never
3:55work. It'll never happen. It did.
3:58>> Giuliard, you're wrong. You're wrong.
4:00>> You're wrong about everything, Julard.
4:03Oh, and now you're starring in
4:04Shrinking. I love this show so much. I
4:08feel like this show has really met the
4:10moment. It just feels like a nice warm
4:12hug when we all need it so desperately.
4:15>> It's so funny. It's laugh out loud
4:17funny. It's emotionally resonant. The
4:19show isn't afraid to explore really
4:22challenging topics like mental health
4:24and grief, uh, single parenting, living
4:28with illness. For for those who haven't
4:30seen the show, tell us what it's about.
4:32It's about this guy Brian who's really
4:36>> by the way, that's a very Brian thing to
4:39>> So, uh, it's about this therapist who's
4:42grieving the loss of his wife. Uh, when
4:45we meet these characters, it's been a
4:47year since the death of Tia. And all of
4:50us had a connection to her, uh, some,
4:52you know, married daughter, um, best
4:55friends, and we're trying to pick up the
4:58pieces. And um so it's it's it's kind of
5:00a hangout show about this guy Jimmy
5:03played by Jason Seagull, the amazing
5:05Jason Seagull, his family, his
5:07neighbors, his workmates. I play his
5:09best friend. We've been best friends
5:12>> And um and their therapists. So So Jason
5:15Seagull, Jessica Williams of the Daily
5:21>> YEAH. And Harrison Ford, who you may
5:22have heard of, are um
5:25>> therapists. Yes. And so every, you know,
5:28every episode we're dealing with mental
5:30health. Um, our own their patients,
5:33theirs, and um, and it it feels like it
5:37came out, you know, it came around at a
5:39really good time. It came out sort of at
5:41the end of the pandemic, and we all were
5:44kind of given permission to talk about
5:46our mental health during the pandemic, I
5:47think, and and it the taboos were sort
5:50>> going away about around that. And uh and
5:54and so here's, you know, not just not
5:56just a show about mental health, but we
5:58have like an action hero talking about
6:02>> And you know, Jason Seagull, who's like
6:05a bro talking about his feelings. Um,
6:08and I I I hear from so many people on
6:11the street or uh on social media like
6:15straight guys who tell tell me and
6:22>> that are that that it mean how much it
6:24means to them how much the show means to
6:25them. Uh that's that's really and so now
6:27here we come. Season 3 is out tomorrow
6:32thank you. It feels like we need a hug
6:35>> I know it feels like we could use a hug.
6:37desperately do. We desperately do. Your
6:39character Brian uh has a baby this
6:45>> What kind of father do you think Brian
6:49>> Brian, don't hold back.
6:50>> Brian is Well, Brian himself is a baby.
6:54Um so, so he's going to have to learn to
6:56be an adult and but the I think his
6:59greatest quality is that he knows it
7:02takes a village and he's got the
7:04greatest village. So, he leans on Jimmy
7:07and Paul and Derek as dads. He leans on
7:10Liz as a mom. He leans on uh Gabby,
7:12Jessica's character, as a shrink.
7:15>> Um, and he knows that he he can't do it
7:17himself. He also has an amazing husband
7:19in Charlie, played by Devon Kawoka,
7:22>> who uh is so wonderful. And so he's his
7:26best quality is even though he he he
7:28puts himself first all the time, his
7:30best quality is knowing that he's going
7:32to need all these people around him.
7:34>> Yes. I I love I heard that you had a fan
7:36come up to you and diagnose your
7:40>> Oh, yeah. Yeah. Somebody came up to me.
7:42This is Somebody came up.
7:44>> By the way, I have to say before for
7:45those who haven't seen it, his character
7:47is so lovable and hilarious and funny.
7:50steals all the scenes. But but also
7:54>> she came up and she was like she was
7:56like I'm a I'm a shrink and I love
7:58shrinking which is a great compliment.
8:00>> She was like and I love your character.
8:01He's such a narcissist.
8:04>> And I was like is he?
8:10>> And then you went back to Bill Lawrence
8:11who created the show. You were like is
8:13>> I was like am I playing a narcissist?
8:14And they're like oh yeah oh yeah. And
8:18then I was like, "Have I been doing it
8:19right all this time?" And then I went to
8:21my therapist and I was like,
8:23>> "Am I a narcissist?"
8:26>> And she said, she said, "Nobody who asks
8:30>> I asked my therapist the same thing.
8:31Yeah, we're same. Oh my god, that's so
8:34funny. Um, you So when when Jason
8:37Seagull was here last
8:39>> he was talking about working with
8:41Harrison Ford and said that Harrison
8:43Ford gave him a compliment about his
8:48True story. He did say that on this
8:51show. What is the nicest thing that
8:53Harrison Ford ever said about you?
9:00>> I was hoping you'd come through with
9:04>> He's going to be so happy when he goes
9:08>> Mom, dad. Um, uh, no, that obviously
9:11that didn't happen. Um
9:14uh he he well he does it he you know
9:18he's withholding. Harrison Ford is is is
9:21generally a withholding person
9:23>> but when he every once in a while he
9:26will ask me something about myself
9:29>> every now and again.
9:30>> Every now and again. And and it's and
9:32and I because he's withhold, you know,
9:34he's developed this this really like
9:37hilarious canankerous persona. Yeah.
9:40That we see in interviews and and and
9:42and and it's really funny and and like
9:44he has everyone on set in stitches
9:46because he's so cranky,
9:50>> but it's not real. And we all know it's
9:52not real. He loves working. He loves
9:54being with us. He loves this character.
9:57And um and you know he will give us when
10:01you get a smile it's just like it melts
10:06>> And um and he uh I think I think for
10:11like he will always ask me about
10:14>> A because he knows I do a lot of
10:16theater. I'm like during every break I
10:18>> You back on Broadway. Tell me
10:20everything. and and it just means the
10:22world like that he's
10:24>> that he you know wants to
10:27>> he's a really good actor
10:29>> and I've learned so much from working
10:32with him. He knows the camera so so
10:34well. He he he he like all is always
10:37talking to the camera the camera
10:39department. Where is this? Is this a
10:41cowboy? Is this you know he's always
10:43like checking in with them and and I'm
10:44always like I mean Vanessa Williams told
10:47me where the camera was 20 years ago and
10:48I still don't know. I still don't really
10:50know it. I'm like, "Oh, yeah. I should
10:53>> Yeah. Where are you?
10:53>> You're not supposed to look in it. No,
10:56>> he's doing it all wrong.
10:57>> Cuz I'm in the theater. I'm cheating to
10:59every camera. You know, whenever there's
11:00a camera, I'm like, you know, whatever
11:02whatever the angle is, I'm I'm looking
11:04at it. And he's so good about that
11:07>> and treats every scene like it's new,
11:10>> he doesn't rest on his laurels ever.
11:13>> I love hearing that. I love it. Makes me
11:15love and respect him even more. Um, so
11:19Season three pre premieres tomorrow.
11:22>> And we also found out just a some news a
11:25little bit ago. There's gonna be a
11:29>> Yeah. We just got picked up. Thank you.
11:30>> JUST GOT PICKED UP.
11:32>> IT'S SO EXCITING.
11:34>> IT'S so cool. It's so nice to know that
11:36like there's more obviously and
11:38especially it's right before the the
11:42premiere we get to find out and and
11:43everyone gets to know. So
11:44>> I'm thrilled to hear. I cannot wait to
11:46watch. Do you have any expectations for
11:49Brian? Where would you like to see Brian
11:52>> Well, it's so interesting because I
11:53don't know like how old the baby will be
11:57>> how far they skip ahead.
11:58>> Yeah. Like how far are we going to skip
11:59ahead? Are we going to pick right up?
12:00Does that mean we get new babies?
12:02Because I really imprinted on the baby
12:05>> Oh yes. like they would bring these B
12:07because they were like little babies and
12:09and they bring these babies in and
12:12I I really I I would like really look
12:15into their eye because it's like it's
12:17just it's a just a baby like they
12:19they're not they're not acting they're
12:21just babying and and it's such a great
12:24thing for an actor to like have you know
12:27like that thing won't tell me a lie.
12:29This thing won't This thing will be
12:31what? It's sort of like,
12:32>> you know, like this is a a mug.
12:36>> that is the most Giuliard thing you have
12:38ever said, by the way. This guy clearly
12:40graduated from Giuliard.
12:42>> Every time there was a scene with a
12:43baby, they would be like, "Do you want
12:44the baby in the crib so we can shoot it
12:46out and you can, you know, then focus on
12:47the scene?" And I was like, "No, give me
12:48the baby. I want to hold the baby. I'm
12:50better with the baby.
12:51>> I want to smell the baby. I want the
12:52baby to poop on me."
12:54>> Um, committed. That's real commitment.
12:56But we we had a break once in shooting
12:58where we didn't see the baby for like 6
13:00weeks and when they brought them back,
13:01it was the same babies. They were
13:03totally different. This is the thing
13:06>> Tell them tell them the thing about
13:08>> The thing about babies is
13:09>> they change all the time.
13:12>> They get bigger. Their faces change. I
13:14was like, "Is this Wait a minute. Is
13:17>> Did you bring me an imposttor baby? And
13:19they're like, "No, that's her now. She's
13:20that. That's how big she is."
13:21>> Yeah. They grow. They develop. And then
13:23one day they turn on you and they treat
13:26THEY TREAT YOU LIKE and they stop
13:28thinking you're cool.
13:30>> I'm just kidding. My son never thought I
13:34I'm so excited for you. I cannot wait to
13:36watch this next season. I'm so happy for
13:38you. Thank you for being here. Such a
13:40delight. Season TV premieres January
13:4428th on Apple TV. Michael Yuri.
