“I taught rats to drive cars, but they taught me to enjoy the ride” #TEDTalks

0:00When I first started teaching rats to

0:01drive cars, I never dreamed that those

0:04little rodents would steer me toward a

0:06surprisingly big discovery, a lesson

0:08about the importance of joy in our

0:10lives. We originally trained them to

0:13drive to understand more about agency

0:15and a sense of control and skill

0:17acquisition on their brains and

0:19behavior. And we so we taught them to

0:22drive these rodent operated vehicles or

0:24ROVs as we call them. and we found some

0:28interesting findings and we published

0:30it. But we quickly realized that this

0:32this program of research had a lot of

0:35potential for science outreach and this

0:37is something that that we really need uh

0:39today. So we decided to keep a group of

0:42rats trained up on driving so that we

0:45could continue with this science

0:47outreach. And they became little rodent

0:49celebrities. We trained them to exert

0:52physical effort for Froot Loops. And

0:55that's the currency of my lab. They love

0:57Froot Loops. So, they work for Froot

0:58Loops. So, we had about five weeks where

1:01the animals had to connect physical

1:03effort digging up those Froot Loops. But

1:06could a neuroscientist study something

1:08as complex as joy in a rat? And that's

1:12what we did recently. We gave them a

1:14choice of walking to the Froot Loop

1:16tree, that's what they drive to, uh, in

1:18a more efficient path, or they could

1:19take a detour and backtrack and jump in

1:22the car and drive to the rewards. and I

1:25couldn't wait to see what they would do.

1:27And what we found was a majority of the

1:29animals did indeed uh backtrack, take a

1:33tour, and jump into the car and drive to

1:36their Froot Loop rewards.

1:39Uh and if if you saw a human jumping in

1:42the background, that was me uh jumping

1:45for joy, seeing rats choose pleasure or

1:48fun over efficiency. I taught rats to
