Here's what's going on. Right in the dead center

of your retina, in the back of your eye, the spot

that spot has almost no blue light detecting cells.

Now, purple is just red plus blue, right?

That lack of blue light detecting cells means

that when you stare directly at a purple dot, the middle

of your eye picks up more of the red, half of the signal.

It's a brighter, more saturated purple and less blue,

but your peripheral vision has more full blue coverage,
