The competition for the starting goalkeeper spot has intensified further after Patrick Le Giang officially obtained Vietnamese citizenship.
Patrick Le Giang’s eligibility gives Kim Sang Sik another option for Vietnam’s goal.
The Vietnamese-born goalkeeper has built a strong reputation in the V-League with his physical presence, quick reflexes and experience, making him a serious contender for the national team.
Alongside Le Giang, Kim Sang Sik can also rely on several other high-quality goalkeepers currently performing well in the domestic league.
These include Dang Van Lam, Nguyen Filip, Nguyen Van Viet, Nguyen Trung Kien and Nguyen Dinh Trieu.
Cao Van Binh is also available if he is called up for preparations for the upcoming match against Malaysia in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.
Because of this depth, Kim Sang Sik has avoided sticking with a single fixed goalkeeper.
In recent matches, he has rotated players in goal rather than relying solely on Dinh Trieu as he did earlier.
Goalkeepers such as Nguyen Filip, Dinh Trieu, Trung Kien and Van Lam have all been given opportunities, highlighting the depth of the current squad.
A likely decision for the starting role
Based on recent form, most of these goalkeepers could reasonably start in the friendly match against Bangladesh or the Asian Cup qualifying game against Malaysia.
On paper, Kim Sang Sik appears to face a difficult decision because none of the candidates stands out as clearly weaker than the others.
However, a closer look suggests the South Korean coach may already have his preferred option.
Many observers believe Nguyen Dinh Trieu remains the most likely starting goalkeeper.
Dinh Trieu could continue as Vietnam’s first-choice goalkeeper.
The Hai Phong goalkeeper has been widely considered one of the most consistent performers in the V-League.
His reliability, ability to minimize mistakes and leadership in organizing the defensive line make him a safe choice, especially as Vietnam seeks stability in important international matches.
Although Patrick Le Giang shows strong potential, he is still a newcomer to the national team.
Adjusting to Vietnam’s defensive system, tactical structure and the pressure of international matches may require additional time.
Nguyen Trung Kien, meanwhile, impressed during the AFC U23 Asian Cup and has demonstrated promising form.
However, he is still relatively young compared with more experienced goalkeepers in the squad.
For Kim Sang Sik, experience and composure in crucial moments appear to be key factors when choosing a goalkeeper capable of commanding the defensive line.
As a result, despite the many available options, the final decision may ultimately reflect a pragmatic approach.
Unless Dinh Trieu encounters fitness issues, it would not be surprising if he continues to start for Vietnam in the upcoming matches against Bangladesh and Malaysia.
