South Carolina Republicans Disagree with Trump on Redistricting

Some Republican state senators in South Carolina stopped an effort to change the state's congressional district map. This map would have removed the only Democratic seat in the U.S. House.
Five Republican state senators worked with Democrats to stop a proposal that would have allowed a vote on redistricting after the legislative session ends.
This happened after President Trump warned on social media that he would be watching closely as lawmakers met to change the state's map.
It will be harder for South Carolina to join other states in changing their maps to remove Democratic congressional districts before the midterms. The GOP will be defending its majority in the House.

South Carolina Republicans were trying to advance a new map that could put Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn out of a job.

Trump urged South Carolina Republicans to be bold and courageous.
Trump said to move the U.S. House primaries to August and leave the rest on the same schedule.
Trump's message came after five Indiana Republican state senators were ousted by Trump-backed challengers.
Shane Massey argued that following Trump's lead on redistricting would be against the interests of South Carolina.
Massey said South Carolina has always punched above its weight.
Massey said he will likely face political payback from Trump and his allies.
Other South Carolina Republicans raised concerns that changing the district could backfire on their party.
The top four Republicans running for governor criticized the lack of legislative action.
The current governor could call the legislature back into special session to try and push through redistricting.
These states are holding primaries today.
The Tennessee legislature adopted a new map that would eliminate the only Democrat-controlled congressional district.
GOP Gov. Bill Lee quickly signed the new maps into law.
Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen vowed legal action.
Cohen said Trump knows he has to rig the game to keep his majority.
Trump praised Tennessee Republicans and urged South Carolina lawmakers to act like them.

The Supreme Court cleared the way for Alabama to put in place a map that would eliminate one of the state's two blue-leaning congressional seats.

That cleared the way for the GOP-controlled state legislature to begin reshaping the map.

How we got here.
The battle over the maps started when Trump floated the idea of mid-decade congressional redistricting.
The mission was to redraw congressional district maps in red states to pad the GOP's fragile House majority.
Trump said Texas will be the biggest one and that'll be five.
Republican Gov. Greg Abbott called a special session to pass the new map.
But Democratic state lawmakers broke quorum and fled Texas.
California voters passed Proposition 50, which returned the power to draw the congressional maps to the Democratic-dominated legislature.
That led to five more Democratic-leaning congressional districts in California.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom spoke during an election night press conference.
The fight quickly spread beyond Texas and California.
Republican-controlled Missouri and Ohio drew new maps as part of Trump's push.
