Drivers Urged to Use Tamper-Proof Screws as Number Plate Thefts Rise

The number of stolen plates rose by 30% to 7,381 last year. There was also a 53% increase in fake number plates from 7,430 to 11,394.

Thieves steal or copy number plates to avoid fines or police. They can also use fake plates to commit crimes without being caught. People may not know their plate has been copied until they get fines in the mail.
