UK Travel Warning for 13 Countries with Higher Risk of Illness

UK travellers have been warned about food poisoning in some popular holiday spots. A study by Cambridge University found 13 countries where people are more likely to get sick.

The Foreign Office's Travel Health Pro website has issued a warning to take precautions when travelling to non-EU countries.

Travel Health Pro reminds tourists to follow good food and water hygiene. Visiting non-EU countries with poor water and sanitation increases the risk of infections like diarrhoea.

Between July and October 2023, many travellers to Egypt, Mexico, Tunisia, and Turkey got stomach bugs. The true number of infections is likely higher as it only counts diagnosed cases.

The study found 13 destinations with higher odds of illness, with Egypt having 23 times higher odds than France.

Eating undercooked meat, drinking purified water, and swallowing water from rivers or lakes increases the risk of illness in low-risk destinations. In high-risk destinations, eating foods on trips, swallowing water from sources, and drinking fruit juice also increase the risk.
