0:20>> Most days, Terry Hawkins does not have

0:23far to go to see a friend.

0:26Viet lives nearby.

0:28Coffee,

0:29food,

0:30jokes.

0:31The two neighbors have fallen into an

0:34easy routine.

0:35>> I didn't plan on retiring here. I just

0:38wanted to come and visit. Almost

0:40instantly, I just thought this is a

0:42special place. And the more and more I

0:45stay here, the more I know I made the

0:47right decision.

0:49>> But Terry is not the first Hawkins to

0:51come to Vietnam.

0:53The man in these photographs is his

0:55father,

0:56an American soldier stationed in Da Nang

0:59in 1966 and 1968.

1:03His father's war also shaped the Vietnam

1:05Terry knew as a child.

1:08Years later, Terry came to see Vietnam

1:11for himself.

1:13>> Because of the American war that

1:15happened, before I came,

1:18I didn't I didn't know how Americans

1:22would be accepted here.

1:24I've I've never met a more welcoming

1:27people than the Vietnamese people.

1:30>> And among those people was Viet, his

1:33neighbor

1:34and a former Vietnamese soldier.

1:36>> You must be very proud of

1:37>> Terry Hawkins' father came to Vietnam

1:40wearing an American uniform. And years

1:42later, Tran Van Viet wore a Vietnamese

1:44one. Today, these photographs from very

1:47different chapters can sit side by side

1:50on the same table while these men share

1:52something far more ordinary, a

1:54friendship.

1:57>> The first time I met Terry, he was

2:00renting an apartment next to my

2:02daughter's house. When we met, we got

2:04along well. We were both open, friendly,

2:08and comfortable talking to each other.

2:10From there, we became close and

2:12eventually became friends.

2:16>> The friendship came first.

2:19The history came later.

2:22>> Terry's father belonged to an earlier

2:24generation. I came later.

2:27That is a story from the past.

2:30Today, Terry and I are very close

2:32friends. Sometimes, we have coffee

2:35together and talk about the lighter

2:36moments of everyday life.

2:42>> Once, [music] Terry knew Vietnam through

2:44war.

2:45Today, it is simply [music] where he

2:47lives.

2:49And where his friend lives next door.
