Stop Making Two Mistakes with Your Food Waste Bins

Food waste bins can get dirty and smelly very quickly. After a few days, the mix of leftovers, peelings, and tea bags starts to break down and smell bad.
When it's hot outside, the problem gets worse. Liquid goes to the bottom, and residue sticks to the sides, making the bin attractive to flies.
If you have these problems, listen to what a British refuse collector, Ashley, says. He posted helpful tips on TikTok.
Ashley talked about two common mistakes people make with their food waste, which can lead to maggots. He said we should avoid these mistakes.
The direction your home faces and where you put your bins can make a difference.
Ashley said we should not leave our food waste bins in direct sunlight.
Many food waste bins are made of dark plastic, which absorbs heat and makes the food inside spoil and attract flies.
If flies multiply in your bin, it will have maggots, which the collectors have to handle.
Ashley said, 'Please don't put your food waste bins in the sun. They cook the food inside, and you get flies and maggots.'
We must put food waste in a biodegradable liner before putting it in the outdoor bin. This helps keep the waste clean and protected from flies.
Using liners may seem like extra work, but it helps keep your bin clean and hygienic.
Ashley said if you don't use a liner, the binmen won't clean it, and it will have mould and maggots if you don't clean it yourself.
He said, 'If you put food waste in the bin, please put it in a bag or something like that.'
Ashley said not putting waste in a bag makes it smell forever until you clean it. He said, 'Please bag it up, and everyone will be happy.'
Ashley asked people to keep their bins out of sunlight and to bag their waste. He said this will make everyone happy and reduce bad smells.
