Venue security approached the group, gave them a written notice and escorted them out. The card cited an infraction of both the Providence Park and the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Code of Conduct, and warned that refusing to provide personal details could lead to a ban from future events.

The NWSL Fan Code of Conduct explicitly forbids spectators from displaying signs, symbols, words or imagery used for political campaigning or advocacy. However, the policy does not offer a clear, objective standard for deciding when a piece of clothing crosses the line into prohibited political expression.

The removal came after local LGBT organizer Hannah Perry posted a warning on social media. Perry told city officials, the Portland police, and the governor that she wanted the group removed, and she directly contacted Providence Park to demand action.

This incident shows how vague stadium policies and external pressure can turn ordinary fan apparel into a ban. When rules leave too much discretion to staff, personal clothing choices can be interpreted as political speech, limiting what fans can wear in public sports venues.
