Why the Tempo’s Coast‑to‑Coast Games Could Grow Women’s Basketball Across Canada
On the court the team is facing difficulties: they are on a 12‑game losing streak and were knocked out of playoff contention after a 93‑82 defeat to the Washington Mystics.
Despite the on‑court woes, the business side looks strong. Tempo president Teresa Resch said every home game at Toronto’s Coca‑Cola Coliseum has been a sell‑out, and a recent game in Montreal attracted a record 20,996 fans, the highest attendance ever for a WNBA regular‑season match.
Resch is driving the push to make the Tempo “Canada’s team.” She brings 13 years of experience from her previous role with the Toronto Raptors, and she repeatedly emphasized that the goal is to represent the whole country, not just one city.
The coast‑to‑coast strategy mirrors the Raptors’ earlier approach of holding training camps and preseason games across the nation. Resch believes that by playing in multiple Canadian markets, the Tempo can build a countrywide fan base, give players a taste of Canada, and put the country on the map of elite women’s basketball.
