What the Moon Looks Like Today
On August 5, the Moon is in the Waning Gibbous phase. We can see 59% of the Moon's surface.
The Moon is on day 22 of the cycle. We can see less of the Moon now. But we can still see some features. We can see the Aristarchus Plateau and the Tycho Crater with our eyes. With binoculars, we can see more.
The next Full Moon is on August 28.
The Moon looks different every month. It takes about 29.5 days to complete one cycle. The Sun, Earth, and Moon move, so we see different parts of the Moon. We see a crescent, half Moon, and Full Moon.
There are eight Moon phases.
New Moon is when the Moon is between Earth and the Sun. We cannot see it.
Waxing Crescent is when we see a small part of the Moon.
First Quarter is when half of the Moon is lit. It looks like a half-Moon. We can see the right side.
Waxing Gibbous is when more than half of the Moon is lit. But it's not full yet.
Full Moon is when the whole Moon is lit. We can see the whole face.
Waning Gibbous is when the Moon starts to lose light. We see less of the right side.
Third Quarter is when the other half of the Moon is lit. We see the left side now.
Waning Crescent is when we see a small part of the Moon before it goes dark.
