The disconnect between policy expectations and public understanding is stark: the RBA’s own community survey found that merely a quarter of respondents correctly recognised that rate hikes eventually dampen inflation, whereas more than half erroneously believed that higher rates would exacerbate price pressures.

Consequently, the conventional monetary‑policy playbook—raising rates to ‘bleed’ demand—may prove insufficient, as the entrenched supply constraints and external shocks continue to fuel price growth irrespective of domestic borrowing costs.
