Trade Tensions Spark Canadian Pride at TIFF

Jay Baruchel stepped onto the TIFF red carpet and told reporters, “We will be fine.” He added that Canada has always “punched above our weight” and that the timing of his film’s debut feels urgent because of the trade war between the two countries.

Baruchel is the lead in The Stunt Driver, a new movie that tells the true story of stuntman Ken Carter. The film premiered at this year’s festival, putting a Canadian‑made story front‑and‑center on an international stage.

Other Canadian talent echoed the same optimism. Devon Bostick, Laurence Leboeuf and veteran comedian‑actress Mary Walsh all spoke about their pride in Canada’s film industry and their confidence that it can thrive despite external pressure.

The backdrop to this confidence is political. Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a proposed federal incentive designed to keep American film productions in the United States, a move that has raised concerns among Canadian filmmakers.

Mary Walsh warned that U.S. aggression could become “the kick in the arse” the Canadian film industry needs, urging Canadians to back their own culture and support local productions.
