Why Support Acts Quit Ed Sheeran’s Tour After Macklemore’s Removal

Macklemore was taken off the Loop Tour after he shouted “free Palestine” on stage at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on Sept. 4. Ed Sheeran later said the decision was not his alone; the tour promoter and venue owners, including Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft, forced the removal.

Finneas, who was set to open for Sheeran on the South American leg in November, announced his withdrawal on Instagram, writing, “Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed. I have decided to withdraw from my upcoming tour dates with Ed Sheeran. I stand with Palestine and its people.”

Irish singer Aaron Rowe, scheduled for ten North‑American shows, also cancelled. He said he “cannot stand by and allow billionaires to use their position of power to silence the rightful voices of those who speak up against Israeli genocide.”

Sheeran’s backing band, the Irish group Beoga, pulled out shortly after Rowe, stating they were leaving “following the silencing of Macklemore by Zionist lobbies.” The band added that they have been friends with Sheeran for over a decade and support dialogue about the Palestinian plight.

Pop band Lukas Graham announced its exit as well. Lead singer Lukas Forchhammer wrote, “Money doesn’t give you the right to own the conversation. We should be able to speak about war, about civilians being killed, about children who deserve to grow up, wherever they live.”

The cascade of withdrawals highlights the pressure artists face when political statements intersect with large‑scale concerts. Sheeran’s comment that promoters and stadium owners demanded Macklemore’s removal shows how commercial interests can dictate artistic line‑ups, prompting other performers to protest by leaving the tour.

These decisions illustrate a broader dilemma: artists must balance personal convictions with the expectations of promoters, venue owners, and audiences, and many choose to walk away rather than be complicit in what they see as censorship.
