What the recent grizzly deaths teach us about handling human‑bear conflicts

Conservation officers in the Nelson area killed a grizzly sow and two of her three yearlings earlier this month, ending a short‑lived attempt to keep the family alive.

Officials explained that one of the remaining yearlings was killed because its age and health made it unsuitable for relocation, while a second yearling died after being moved and later found rummaging through garbage near Christina Lake. The fourth yearling was also relocated; it first appeared near Christina Lake but is now being monitored by wildlife staff.

Deputy chief Andrew Milne of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service said the bears were coming into close proximity with people and were accessing non‑natural food sources, which forced officers to intervene.

Outgoing Wildsafe B.C. Nelson community coordinator Lisa Thomson resigned and publicly called for change, describing “multiple failures on many levels.” She urged residents, municipalities and businesses to work together on measures such as animal‑proof trash containers, removal of fruit‑bearing plants, and active policing of attractants.

The incident shows that poor waste management, hasty relocation decisions, and a lack of coordinated community action can turn a bear family into a public safety problem. Implementing the kind of coordinated steps Thomson suggested could help keep bears wild and people safe.
