What causes avalanches, and can you survive them? - Simon Trautman

0:06In February 2012, pro skier Elyse Saugstad was carving through the slopes
0:12of the Cascade Mountains
0:13when a crack formed in the snowpack above her.
0:16Before she was fully engulfed by a 5,000-ton wall of snow,
0:20Elyse heard “AVALANCHE!” just in time to react with a lifesaving maneuver.
0:26So, how could she survive this crushing snow surge?
0:30Avalanches are the rapid descension of snow, ice, rock, or a combination of these
0:36down a slope.
0:37They can be destructive natural disasters and personal tragedies:
0:41in the United States alone, avalanches kill an average of 27 people annually.
0:47These alpine nightmares don’t just awaken out of nowhere;
0:51they need three specific conditions.
0:54First, the mountain needs to have the right slope,
0:58typically between 30 and 45 degrees.
1:01This is shallow enough to allow snow to build up on the slope,
1:05yet steep enough to provide enough potential energy for movement.
1:09Second, they typically need a layer of sturdy snow
1:13deposited over a weak or unstable layer,
1:16or what’s sometimes called “something over nothing.”
1:19Take the Cascade Mountain avalanche,
1:21where recent heavy storms deposited a nearly 1-meter-deep slab of fresh snow.
1:28Below this sat a thin layer of surface hoar.
1:31These are delicate, feathery ice crystals
1:33that form when water vapor in the air rapidly freezes on the surface of snow,
1:38almost like dew in the wintertime.
1:41Finally, avalanches need a trigger,
1:43something to collapse the weak layer and put the snow in motion.
1:47A trigger can be natural, such as heavy snowfall, strong winds, rainfall,
1:52or even other avalanches.
1:55Or they can be human-caused, like the surface impact of skiers or snowmobilers.
2:01Since fractures can propagate quickly through the snowpack,
2:04triggers can originate hundreds of meters away—
2:06upstream, downstream, or even adjacent to the avalanche’s path.
2:12Once in motion, how quickly an avalanche moves depends on the slope’s steepness,
2:17its exposure or vegetation cover, terrain roughness,
2:21and the type and amount of snow involved.
2:24For example, dry, light, and loosely bonded snow tends to travel fast,
2:30forming a powder cloud as it moves.
2:33In contrast, wet snow avalanches,
2:35caused by water moving through the snowpack,
2:38travel more slowly but are much denser and can be particularly destructive.
2:43Larger avalanches can travel more than 160 kilometers per hour,
2:47breaking trees, destroying buildings, and burying roadways.
2:52In 1970, one particularly massive avalanche
2:56consisting of 50 to 100 million cubic meters
3:00of glacial ice, snow, mud, and rock
3:03reached speeds of over 300 kilometers per hour.
3:07This avalanche proved to be the deadliest in history,
3:10engulfing an entire Peruvian town and killing 18,000 people.
3:16Avalanches aren't always this large,
3:18but even smaller ones can be dangerous for anyone caught in their path.
3:22As snow rushes downhill, it can behave like both a solid and a liquid,
3:27making its movement difficult to predict.
3:30At the fastest-moving front,
3:32surface snow moves faster than the snow beneath,
3:35pulling victims deep into the snowpack and scattering them across wide areas,
3:40making rescue difficult.
3:42Once an avalanche slows, the snow loses its fluid-like properties and compacts,
3:47leaving victims immobilized and unable to escape on their own.
3:52For these reasons, the best way to survive an avalanche
3:55is to avoid one altogether.
3:57Thankfully, at most ski resorts, parks, and even highways,
4:03avalanche workers mitigate risk by continuously monitoring the weather,
4:07stability of the snowpack, and human activity.
4:10If a threat is detected,
4:11they'll close terrain
4:12and may even intentionally trigger a controlled avalanche
4:16with explosives or artillery.
4:18However, there are regions where avalanche risk is not actively mitigated,
4:23known as the backcountry.
4:25Here, you are responsible for managing your own risk.
4:29Local avalanche centers provide avalanche forecasts,
4:32and anyone entering the backcountry should understand them,
4:35be properly trained, and carry essential rescue gear.
4:38And ultimately, in high-hazard terrain,
4:41there's no way to completely eliminate risk.
4:44The group at the Cascade Mountains consisted of highly experienced skiers.
4:49Yet the area was very exposed, and following a large storm,
4:53the avalanche danger forecast was elevated.
4:56In the end, three skiers lost their lives.
4:59But not Elyse, as she was able to deploy an inflatable airbag.
5:03These devices are imperfect and a last line of defense,
5:07yet can keep a victim closer to the surface,
5:09improving their chance of rescue should disaster strike.
