Vietnamese Lawmakers Want Better Protection for Workers Abroad
Nguyen Thanh Liem said some workers use contracts to enter a foreign country and then leave their jobs to find higher pay. Vietnamese companies also face problems when sending workers abroad. Some workers are tricked or forced into bad situations.
There is no national list of companies that send workers abroad, making it hard to check if they are legal. Some companies use worker contracts to hide bad activities like human trafficking.
The new law has rules to fix these problems and help the government control the sending of workers abroad.
Liem suggested that worker recruitment agencies should contact Vietnamese embassies in the countries where workers are sent. This would help protect workers when problems happen. Agencies should also have a way to talk to embassies.
Ly Anh Thu said companies should be responsible for choosing workers to prevent illegal activities and clearly say who is responsible when problems happen.
Thu proposed that the law should ensure fairness and transparency in choosing workers for training and jobs. The law should also help workers who return home by recognizing their skills and connecting them with businesses.
Thu suggested that the law should include rules to stop workers from being tricked or exploited. It should also have a way to assess risks and update the list of safe and unsafe places for workers.
Ly Huong said many countries, like the Republic of Korea, need seasonal workers in areas like farming and tourism. These jobs can last from five months to less than a year.
Huong proposed that the law should include a way to send seasonal workers abroad through cooperation between Vietnam and other countries. This would help Vietnamese workers find more job opportunities and make the law better.
