Explosive Yet Gentle: How Plyometrics Boost Seniors’ Balance, Speed and Bone Health
Dr Chiam Tut Fu, a visiting sports‑medicine physician at Ascensus Health Specialist Centre, explains that plyometric exercises are essential for building agility, balance and speed in older adults. “There is a decline in speed, reaction time and body balance with age, and so plyometrics can help to improve these areas,” he says.
Independent trainer Joshua Tan agrees, noting that “plyometrics trains your body to move and react faster, so when you start to fall, you have a real chance of catching yourself or pushing back up off the floor.” He adds that senior programmes use slower, lower‑impact movements and stay within a pain‑free range of motion, especially at the beginning.
A systematic review of senior plyometrics found that jumping and hopping generate forces that activate osteoblasts and osteocytes – the cells that build and maintain bone tissue. Moreover, Dr Chiam says seniors can notice better balance, faster reaction time, increased speed and stronger muscles after just one month of twice‑weekly sessions.
With carefully designed, low‑impact plyometric routines, older adults can safely work on the neuromuscular and skeletal systems that support everyday movements, making the exercises a practical addition to a balanced fitness plan.
