Thailand Plans to Sell 300,000 Tons of Durian from the South

The head of the Department of Internal Trade, Wittayakorn Maneenetr, said that southern Thailand will have 752,515 tons of durian this year. This is 30% more than last year, and about 35% has already been sold.

He said that prices went down early in the season because China stopped buying due to quality issues and because other countries and parts of Thailand are also selling durians.

To keep prices stable, the department is buying durians early and running promotions to get people to buy them. The prices for southern Monthong durians are now between 85-105 baht per kilogram for the best quality, 60-80 baht for the middle quality, and 40-55 baht for the lowest quality.

The plan to sell 300,000 tons of southern durians includes selling 3,700 tons through advance contracts, 9,000 tons through promotions, and 281,000 tons through other distribution networks.

Other things the government will do include setting up places where people can buy durians directly, helping with delivery costs, and supporting companies that process durians.

The Ministry of Commerce has a plan to promote durians to tourists, work with food companies to create durian menus, and take foreign ambassadors to see where durians are grown in places like Chumphon, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Even though there were problems at the start of the season, Thailand is still exporting a lot of durians. From January 1 to July 5, the country sent out 908,047.46 tons of durians in 55,831 shipments, which made over 104.19 billion baht.
