Hauser stressed that higher Australian interest rates are unlikely to mitigate any of these vectors; the geopolitical clash between the United States and Iran will persist irrespective of mortgage costs, the AI surge is financed chiefly by overseas multinationals, and tighter financing conditions risk throttling domestic producers by pushing some firms into insolvency and discouraging capital expenditure.

The disconnect between policy expectations and public understanding is stark: the RBA’s own community survey found that merely a quarter of respondents correctly recognised that rate hikes eventually dampen inflation, whereas more than half erroneously believed that higher rates would exacerbate price pressures.

Consequently, the conventional monetary‑policy playbook—raising rates to ‘bleed’ demand—may prove insufficient, as the entrenched supply constraints and external shocks continue to fuel price growth irrespective of domestic borrowing costs.
