Stellantis looks to sell Brampton plant as market and trade pressures outweigh Jeep Compass promise

Stellantis announced a memorandum of understanding with Canadian armoured‑vehicle maker Roshel for a possible sale of its Brampton assembly plant, according to a letter shared with CBC News.

The Brampton plant has been idle since 2023. It was originally scheduled to be retooled to build the Jeep Compass, but Stellantis paused the retooling in early 2025 and shifted the model’s production to the United States.

In a corporate statement, Stellantis said that recent market and trade conditions have directly affected the original business case for the plant. The company added that after evaluating a range of options, none offered a sustainable long‑term business case for keeping the facility operational.

Unifor national president Lana Payne urged Stellantis to honour its promise, chanting “Don’t close, don’t sell” and warning that the current collective agreement ends on Sept. 20, making a strike a real possibility.

The situation shows how shifting market dynamics, trade‑policy uncertainty and the need for profitable production lines can force automakers to rethink earlier investment plans, putting jobs and the Canadian auto sector at risk.
