Vanguard commits $2.5 billion to Vietnam after market’s emerging‑market upgrade

Vanguard plans to invest $2.5 billion in Vietnam stocks within a year, Vanguard’s head of Investments and Global Equity for Asia‑Pacific, Duncan Burns, said at a Friday event.

Vietnam’s stock market will be upgraded to “emerging” status under FTSE Russell standards on Sept. 21, giving Vietnamese equities greater chances to attract international capital.

FTSE added 27 Vietnamese stocks to its emerging‑market index basket: three large‑cap (Vietcombank, Vingroup, Vinhomes), three mid‑cap (BIDV, Hoa Phat Group, VPBank) and 21 small‑cap shares.

Burns explained that markets included in major benchmark indices usually gain higher visibility, which draws more investors and opens access to global capital.

Vanguard is the world’s second‑largest asset manager, overseeing about $13 trillion for more than 60 million investors worldwide.

SSI Research estimates that Vanguard funds tracking the FTSE Global Equity Index Series could make net purchases of roughly $240.5 million across the 27 Vietnamese stocks over the next year.
