What Gloria Steinem’s Life Teaches Us About Building Lasting Feminist Movements

Gloria Steinem, who died at 92 on a Wednesday at her New York City home, was one of the most recognizable faces of American feminism.

Her public career began in journalism, but a 1969 abortion‑rights hearing she covered changed everything. Steinem later said that hearing sparked her career as a women’s‑rights activist.

In 1971 she helped launch the National Women’s Political Caucus, and the following year she co‑founded Ms. Magazine, a publication created by women for women. Despite early doubts from critics, the magazine survived and still publishes today.

Steinem also co‑founded the Women’s Action Alliance and, in 2004, the Women’s Media Center. These organisations gave feminist activists new platforms for lobbying, education and media representation.

She believed that real change required face‑to‑face interaction. In a 2015 interview with the Associated Press she told the reporter, “You can’t do it on the phone or on the web… you have to be there with all five senses.” This emphasis on personal connection shaped her famous “talking circles.”

Even after becoming a household name, Steinem faced personal fears and public criticism. She admitted she was terrified of public speaking, and she often complained that the media focused on her looks rather than her ideas. Yet she kept speaking, traveling the world into her 80s to address issues from genital mutilation to women’s political representation.

Her lifelong work was recognized in 2013 when President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, saying her activism had expanded respect and opportunities for women worldwide.

From Steinem’s story we can see three key lessons for modern feminist movements: first, a single pivotal experience can ignite long‑term activism; second, building lasting institutions—magazines, political caucuses, media centers—helps sustain momentum; third, personal courage and direct engagement keep the movement grounded in everyday lives.
