Former Hair Salon Worker Jailed for Misusing Customer Vouchers

A former hair salon worker spent over S$1,000 of customers' vouchers on herself.

Phang Koh Xing accessed customers' messages on their phones while helping them with payments.

Phang, 31, was jailed for six weeks for misusing the vouchers and accessing computers to commit theft.

Two other similar charges were considered during her sentencing.

Phang must pay back the money she took or serve more jail time.

She spent a total of S$1,167 of the customers' vouchers.

At the time, Phang worked at a hair salon and helped customers with phone payments. She has since quit her job.

Her job involved setting up payments on customers' phones.

A 60-year-old woman gave Phang her phone to set up a payment plan. Phang then accessed her messages and found a voucher link.

Phang sent the voucher link to her own phone while setting up the payment.

Phang used the vouchers at several stores, including a supermarket and a department store, and spent S$575.

The customer found out and reported Phang to the police.

Phang did not pay back the money she took from this customer.

In another case, a 31-year-old woman gave Phang her phone to set up a payment.

Phang accessed the woman's messages and sent the voucher link to her own phone.

Phang spent S$592 using the vouchers at several stores, including a salon and a supermarket.

The second customer also reported Phang to the police.

Phang gave S$200 back to the second customer.

The prosecutor asked for Phang to be jailed and to pay back the money. The judge agreed.

The prosecutor said Phang was trusted to help customers with their phones but instead misused that trust.

Phang misused the trust to get to the customers' vouchers.

For the computer misuse charge, Phang could have been jailed for up to 10 years or fined.

For the breach of trust charge, Phang could have been jailed for up to seven years or fined.
