The 1960s‑built blast furnace at the Whyalla steelworks will be permanently shut, eliminating more than 600 jobs in the regional city.

Since February 2025, state and federal governments have committed almost $3 billion to keep the Whyalla steelworks operating. Of that amount, $1.9 billion is set aside for a new owner to co‑invest in a greener future, including the installation of an electric arc furnace.

The government says a new steelworks owner will be selected before the end of the year. Bidders Jindal Steel and M Resources are in the running, while BlueScope Steel retains a right of last offer.

Premier Peter Malinauskas warned that the community will only feel relief when the promised capital appears on the ground, turning paper commitments into real equipment and jobs.

The closure matters because it threatens the town’s economic base and tests whether the billions spent will ever translate into a sustainable, modern steel industry for Whyalla.
