0:03and one very long day Edge of Tomorrow
0:06has a deceptively complex story and an
0:08even more complicated ending here's what
0:12understanding the ending of Edge of
0:14Tomorrow requires you to pay pretty
0:16close attention from the beginning
0:17because what the mimics are doing gets
0:19explained pretty early on and it goes by
0:22fast according to Dr Carter a mimic
0:24biologist the mimics are really like one
0:27giant interconnected organism the larger
0:30Alpha mimics act as the central nervous
0:32system and command the mimic drones
0:34these high-ranking Alphas then return
0:37information to be processed by the
0:40Omega mimic each time an alpha dies the
0:43Omega rolls the clock back 24 hours
0:45keeping all of their Collective
0:47knowledge intact and enabling the mimics
0:49to adjust their strategies in order to
0:51gain a definitive Victory while the
0:53alphas seem to be the decision makers of
0:56the mimics dictating the actions of the
0:58drones and determining their strategy
1:00Carter hypothesizes that since the Omega
1:03essentially functions as the brain of
1:05the mimics the only way to stop the
1:07invasion is to destroy it the problem is
1:10that thanks to their powers the mimics
1:12know about the military's biggest
1:14weakness and they have a lot more
1:16experience than cage and vertasky in
1:19using their time Loop abilities to their
1:21advantage so they're pretty Adept at
1:23keeping the Omega safe and hidden
1:25there's a whole juicy prequel just
1:28waiting to be made in the story of Rita
1:30vertesky and the Battle of Verdun which
1:33we hear about in bits and pieces but
1:34never see from what we learn at the
1:36beginning of the film The Human battle
1:38against the mimics dragged on for five
1:40years before the United Defense Force
1:42finally claimed their first Victory the
1:45offensive was led by Sergeant vertesky
1:47who was later nicknamed the angel of
1:49Verdun the popular version of the story
1:51is that Rita led the UDF troops to
1:54Victory due to her abilities as an
1:56exceptional Soldier but the truth is she
1:58had another advantage that no one knew
2:00about she was living in a Time Loop the
2:03first time bratasky fought the Battle of
2:05Verdun she was killed but similar to
2:07what would later happen to cage when
2:09Rita died she also managed to take an
2:12alpha with her and their blood mingled
2:14together as they both died but instead
2:16of staying dead Rita woke up a day
2:19before Verdun she lived out that battle
2:21over and over gaining a bit more ground
2:24each time before she died after several
2:27resets Rita started experiencing visions
2:29of the Omega and she attempted to
2:31interpret them in order to destroy the
2:34brain and defeat the mimics once and for
2:36all but in the course of finally leading
2:38the UDF to victory over the mimics she
2:40was badly injured and received a blood
2:42transfusion without the mimic blood she
2:45lost both the looping ability and the
2:48the first time cage was dropped into the
2:51middle of the battle in France he had no
2:53idea what he was doing he didn't even
2:55know how to turn off the safety on his
2:57gun yet he managed to survive through
2:59sheer luck however cage eventually wound
3:02up alone and on his back surrounded by
3:05mimics including a giant blue-tinged
3:07Alpha in desperation cage grabbed for a
3:10UDF incendiary device lying beside him
3:13on the ground and fired it off right as
3:16the alpha lunged for him while the
3:18resulting explosion was powerful enough
3:20to blow up the alpha it killed him as
3:22well as cage died the blood of the alpha
3:25dripped into his open wounds passing
3:27along its link to the Omega and giving
3:30cage the same time traveling ability the
3:32alphas have as with the alphas his
3:35Consciousness was knocked back 24 hours
3:37in time since the invasion had taken
3:39place in the morning he woke up on the
3:41preceding morning when he first arrived
3:43at the Heathrow military base when you
3:46kill that Alpha you inadvertently
3:47entered the enemy's nervous system
3:50once cage and bratasky start working
3:52together Rita preps cage for what to
3:54expect he'll keep looping over and over
3:57and eventually start experiencing
3:59visions of the Omega when that happens
4:01the two of them can use Cage's Visions
4:03to locate the Omega and destroy it when
4:06Cage's visions do start he's able to use
4:08architectural Clues to narrow the
4:11omega's location to a dam in Germany
4:13Cajun potaski spend countless Loops
4:16attempting to get from the beach in
4:17France to the dam in Germany but once
4:20cage finally reaches his destination
4:21he's horrified to realize the Omega
4:24isn't there after all it turns out that
4:26his Visions weren't a glimpse into the
4:28omega's Consciousness but rather a
4:30carefully laid trap the Omega showed him
4:32exactly what it wanted him to see cage
4:35is greeted by an alpha and a drone with
4:37the Omega nowhere to be found while
4:40previous mimics have killed cage the
4:41instant they get a chance these mimics
4:43seem to have something else in mind
4:45instead of ripping him apart the alpha
4:48wounds cage giving him a deep gash that
4:50bleeds profusely cage realizes that this
4:53is the mimic's true plan to lure him
4:55away from his allies and then steal back
4:57the power kept in his blood although the
5:00visions of the dam in Germany proved to
5:02be a red herring the Omega was still
5:04hunkered down in Europe just in a
5:05different country after Cajun vatasky
5:08stopped relying on his Visions to lead
5:10them where they needed to go they
5:11managed to locate the Omega through a
5:14different method using the direct link
5:16between the Omega and Alphas to pinpoint
5:19ultimately the real Omega is located
5:22deep beneath the Louvre in Paris France
5:24when cage vertasky and the Rogue J Squad
5:28arrive at the famous Museum they
5:30discover that the area is flooded by the
5:32same river with the Omega located
5:34underwater the entire region is in
5:37disarray following the mimic attacks on
5:39Paris and the resulting floods
5:41so while normally there's no water
5:43underneath the Louvre in this decimated
5:45world cage has to swim the final
5:47distance down to the Omega
5:49after realizing that the Visions are not
5:52a road map to the mimic's greatest
5:53weakness Cajun vatasky are forced to
5:56reevaluate their strategy to destroy the
5:59Omega they decide instead to resort to a
6:01piece of technology Carter started
6:03developing when Rita was the one caught
6:05in the loop Carter was never able to
6:07complete this transponder since for
6:09taskey lost the ability to loot before
6:11they could test it on her and Carter
6:13subsequently lost his job and had his
6:15research confiscated by the UDF after
6:18getting fired it appeared that Carter
6:20tried making a new transponder but he
6:22told vertaski it didn't work so instead
6:25they had to acquire Carter's original
6:27device which was kept in a safe and
6:29general Brigham's office while the
6:31mechanics of the transponder are left a
6:33bit fuzzy it works by making contact
6:36with the blood of an alpha through which
6:38it establishes a link to the Omega and
6:40determines the creature's location since
6:42Cage's blood has the same properties as
6:44that of an alpha britasky was able to
6:47use the transponder on cage which is how
6:49they determined that the Omega is in
6:52according to vertaski the Only Rule cage
6:55must abide by while he Loops is that if
6:57he's injured he has to make sure he dies
7:00this is the Only Rule
7:02you get injured on the field you better
7:04make sure you die she tells him that the
7:06way she lost the looping ability was
7:08through a blood transfusion causing her
7:10to conclude that blood is the key to the
7:12ability it's never clear exactly how
7:15much blood cage could afford to lose
7:16while still holding on to his ability to
7:19reset based on his other injuries
7:21throughout the film he could definitely
7:22spare at least a pint or two without
7:24risking his link with the Omega and it's
7:26unlikely that a transfusion would have
7:28replaced every drop so it seems most
7:30likely that while some of the Alpha's
7:32blood would remain in his body a
7:34transfusion would dilute it to the point
7:36where the mimic link was severed
7:38after receiving a blood transfusion
7:41following his theft of Dr Carter's
7:43transponder from General Brigham's
7:45office Cajun potaski realized they're
7:47all out of resets that evening is their
7:49very last chance to find the Omega and
7:52prevent the UDF invasion in France The
7:54Invasion is in reality a trap set by the
7:57mimics that will result in the ultimate
7:59and absolute defeat of humanity knowing
8:01they won't get another opportunity they
8:03enlist the help of J-Squad they fly to
8:06Paris where the area around the Louvre
8:08is completely overrun with mimics and
8:11all of J-Squad winds up sacrificing
8:13themselves in their quest to get caged
8:15in for tasky inside once they finally
8:17made it in vertaski offers to provide a
8:20distraction that will allow cage to
8:22cover the remaining distance to the
8:23Omega they both know that neither one of
8:25them has any hope of making it out alive
8:27as an alpha kills for tasky cage gets to
8:31the edge of the water covering the Omega
8:33and begins to swim down to it holding a
8:35belt of grenades the alpha follows him
8:38and stabs him through the chest but
8:40before cage dies he pulls the pins of
8:42the grenades and drops them down to the
8:44Omega as the Omega dies it attempts to
8:47restart the day again but it would seem
8:49that the Omega can't reset itself and
8:51instead of giving the mimics a do-over
8:53it transmits its own death back 24 hours
8:55this has the effect of killing all of
8:58the mimics a day before the Omega itself
9:02throughout the movie Cajun for taskey
9:05know that if he receives a blood
9:06transfusion he'll lose the reset ability
9:08which is why they ensure that he dies
9:10each time they don't complete their goal
9:12so when he and Rita get into a car
9:15accident following their theft of the
9:16transponder from Brigham's office and
9:18cage is given a transfusion they both
9:21realize they're on their last life but
9:23after the destruction of the Omega cage
9:25wakes up again apparently cage held on
9:28to life just long enough to get bathed
9:30in the omega's blood when the grenades
9:32went off giving him the reset ability
9:34again having that blood in his system
9:36when he died meant that when the Omega
9:38attempted to reset the day cage was
9:40reset too however unlike the mimics
9:43Cage's life wasn't dependent on the
9:45Omega so while the omega's attempted
9:47reset resulted in the deaths of all
9:49mimics cage wasn't affected and got one
9:51last life by the end of Edge of Tomorrow
9:54we've seen cage reset countless times
9:57always at Heathrow military base on the
9:59morning before The Invasion but at the
10:01end of the film cage wakes up in a
10:03helicopter on his way to his meeting
10:05with Brigham before he was ever sent to
10:07Heathrow the different reset points can
10:09be confusing after watching cage always
10:11return to the same time previously but
10:14it makes sense as long as you understand
10:15that cage lost the reset ability before
10:18the end and then regained it the first
10:20time cage died he reset 24 hours into
10:23the past at Heathrow the morning before
10:25The Invasion think of that moment in
10:27time at Heathrow as a video game save
10:29point every subsequent time cage died no
10:31matter how much time passed between his
10:33waking up and that particular death he
10:35always reverted to that Original Point
10:37extending the video game analogy when he
10:39lost the reset ability the saved game
10:41was deleted so the second time he gained
10:43the mimic ability he had to spin up a
10:45new game this established its own unique
10:48save point 24 hours before he killed the
10:50Omega since the Omega died in the early
10:52hours of the morning before the France
10:54Invasion cage reset to the previous
10:57morning right before he met with Brigham
10:59earlier than his arrival at Heathrow
11:02it would be easy to finish Edge of
11:04Tomorrow wondering if cage still has the
11:06ability to reset again if he died since
11:08that's what he does after defeating the
11:10Omega of course without the mimics to
11:12fight cage hopefully wouldn't find
11:13himself facing death every day but it
11:15could still be a handy ability to have
11:17in case he were to for example
11:19accidentally get himself run over by
11:27however there's no need to speculate
11:28about Cage's power since Chances Are by
11:31the end of the film he doesn't have it
11:33anymore the way that Dr Carter explains
11:35the mimic's ability to cage is that when
11:37an alpha dies the Omega resets it back
11:40to the day before the alpha isn't
11:42resetting itself and it seems to have no
11:44special abilities without the guidance
11:46of the Omega since cage essentially
11:48stepped into the role of an alpha when
11:50he died the time looping isn't his power
11:52without an Omega around the fleeing
11:55Cage's Consciousness back in time
11:56whenever he dies cage is fated to live
11:58and die with no repeat just like the
