Old socks cleaning hack can help reduce dust on skirting boards and blinds

Spring is a delightful season as the sun finally emerges after a lengthy winter, but it can often leave your home appearing somewhat drab as it swiftly becomes coated in dust.
Dust can pile up in your home from indoors and outdoor particles, usually from skin cells, pets, fabric fibres and crumbs. Flowers are just starting to blossom too, which can frequently result in pollen mingling with dust, and when we open our windows, this debris will disperse indoors.
It can be exasperating attempting to remove dust from tricky areas like skirting boards and window blinds, but there's a method to make cleaning them much simpler - and it's with an item you will have plenty of.
Grace Micere, from Bare Kind, has strongly endorsed wiping down surfaces with old socks as they're actually very adept at capturing dust to prevent it spreading. She said: "Simply slip one over your hand and use it as a dusting mitt. They work great for cleaning furniture, blinds, baseboards and much more."
So all the odd socks you may have accumulated over the years may finally have a good use.

Dust clings to surfaces because static electricity often accumulates on materials such as wood and plastic. Blinds, skirting boards and even wooden floors tend to be most affected by dust since they're near windows or lower surfaces where dust naturally settles.
Rubbing these surfaces with an old sock creates friction and generates a minor static charge that attracts dust. This also reduces further static build-up on these surfaces, helping dust stay away for longer and keeping your home cleaner.
It's advisable to try this cleaning technique with fuzzy or textured socks, as dust is more inclined to stick to synthetic fibres since they generate more static electricity.
To start, slip the sock onto your hand like a glove and dampen it slightly. A touch of water will help dust adhere better to the sock fibres and make cleaning easier.
Then, simply run your hand along the top and edges of dusty surfaces. This works best on skirting boards, radiators, and window blinds.
When you're finished, give the sock a thorough shake over a bin to dislodge the dust, then pop it in the washing machine.
Wipe down surfaces once weekly in spring to minimise static build-up and help prevent dust from entering your home. How long the dust stays away will depend on how frequently you open your windows and also your local weather conditions, as wind can carry more dust and pollen inside.
