A man was shot dead by police after a long standoff in Bedford.

Police in Bedford got a call about damaged cars on Aylesbury Road and found a man in his 40s who was making threats.

Special police and negotiators arrived at the scene. Some homes were evacuated.

Police tried to talk to the man for hours before he showed a weapon on Tuesday.

Armed police shot the man, who died. His family was told.

People can now go back to their homes, but police are still investigating.

The police are looking into what happened with help from another group.
