Iran News: UAE Fights Back
Monday, May 18, 2026
A drone caused a fire near a nuclear power plant in Abu Dhabi.
Hello, I'm Matthew Doran in Jerusalem.
This is our weekly Middle East war update. The war started 79 days ago, and there was a ceasefire 5 weeks ago. It's been 5 weeks since the ceasefire was announced.
Here's what you need to know now:
Here's what to watch:
The UAE is investigating a drone attack. Many people think Iran was behind it because Iran has sent many missiles and drones to the UAE during the war.
Iran might be trying to distract from its own nuclear plans by pointing at other countries' nuclear abilities.
Iran fired missiles near Israel's nuclear facility in March.
The US and Israel attacked Iran over 2 months ago. The war is still affecting the world. The conflict is still global.
The UAE says it can defend itself. This shows how unstable the region is, even after the US and Iran's ceasefire.
The UAE attacked Iran last week. This makes the UAE a part of the war, not just a target. The UAE's relationship with Israel is getting stronger.
Saudi Arabia also attacked Iran after being targeted by Iranian missiles and drones.
There are rumors that the US and Israel will restart the war. This might be seen differently after Trump met with Xi and returned without China's help to convince Iran to make a deal.
It's hard to take the US president's threats seriously because he's said similar things before.
More attacks on important sites could make things worse.
Here's what I'm watching:
Some ships are trying to break Israel's blockade of Gaza. There are 11 Australians on the ships. They want to highlight the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The ships are trying to break the blockade, which has been in place for almost 20 years. The crew might face the same fate as their colleagues who were stopped by Israel last month.
The Israeli navy stopped the ships in international waters at night. The crew was detained and taken to Greece, and the ships were seized or left unusable.
The people who organized the ships accused Israel of piracy. Some countries, like Italy, criticized Israel's actions.
Thanks for reading. I'll see you next week.
